BFP update - UPDATE

We had our first prenatal appointment a couple weeks ago.  The doc was concerned by some things on the ultrasound so she ordered another ultrasound to be done with a better machine than the ones in the room.  Since we were going on vacation the following week, she wanted this done the next day (Friday).  The doc called with the results.  The radiologist noticed some swelling around the baby's head and thorax - questionable fetal edema.  I was referred to a high risk OB (perinatalogist).  I spoke with him on the phone and he explained the possible causes of fetal edema and gave me some options for testing.  The causes included chromosomal abnormalities - Down's, Turner's Trisomy 18; an infection, or unknown causes and it could resolve itself.  He gave us options for CVS, Amniocentesis or a blood test at 12 weeks.  There is a very, very high risk of miscarriage with fetal edema.  We opted for a blood test at 12 weeks and another ultrasound.  So...that apt is on Monday, Sept. 8th.  We will have an ultrasound, meet with the OB and a genetic counselor.

Oh and at our initial prenatal apt the doc found a mass on my right breast.  Thankfully I had that ultrasound today and everything looks good - normal tissue!

I'm still in shock.  Hoping that it resolves itself.  Super anxious.  Ugh.  Thanks for reading this long post....

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. Unfortunately I have had a couple experiences with poor prenatal diagnoses and the decision making processes that go along with them. I had an amnio with my first pregnancy and it wasn't as bad as I had expected, and they actually have quite a low risk if done by someone who does them frequently. With my most recent pregnancy, I had a MaterniT21 blood test, which can test for several chromosomal issues (we had the 'enhanced screening' that tests for more than T18 and T21). I hope that it turns out to be nothing for you, but if there are continued issues, a blood test may provide some answers. It was covered by insurance for us because of the heart defect diagnosis. Feel free to PM me if you ever want to talk.

  • Thank you ladies.  It helps just to talk about it.  It is so hard not having any answers.  I'm hoping that the ultrasound on Monday gives us some good news.  I will definitely keep you guys posted.  In the meantime I have been doing too much reading on the internet.... 90% of babies diagnosed with edema do not make it to term and those who do, die shortly after birth.  It's hard to have hope with those statistics.  :(

    I hate that I know how you feel.  Our first pregnancy ended up being a terminal diagnosis, and we decided not to carry to term.  I hope you don't end up finding yourself in the same position, but I'll reiterate my willingness to talk if you need to.

  • Hi ladies - thank you for all of your positive thoughts, prayers and vibes.  Unfortunately, the edema was worse - it is now classified as a cystic hygroma.  I was shocked at how much larger it was.  :(  Due to the severity of the cystic hygroma and the early diagnosis - it was deemed fatal.  Now we have to decide if we wait to miscarry - which could be anytime or much later in the pregnancy.  Or if we terminate.  I just cannot believe that we are being faced with this.

    Again, thank you all for your support.

    This just breaks my heart - I am so sorry to hear about this diagnosis @tapthathank .

    One of the other ladies on the Nov'14 BMB, @lisaren, went through something very similar back in May.  I know sometimes it's helpful to speak with someone who has gone through a similar situation in case you wanted to contact her.

    @lisaren- I hope you don't mind me throwing your name out there.  If you'd rather I take it down, just let me know.

    Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

  • I'm so sorry. :( ::hugs::
  • I'm so sorry. Again I'm happy to discuss our decision not to carry to term if you'd like. There are also 2 boards on Babycenter that you may find helpful - one is Termination for Medical Reasons and the other is Carry to Term Despite Poor or Fatal Diagnosis. I hope you can come to a decision you feel comfortable with. As terrible as it was to have to make that decision, not carrying to term was right for us. That was my first pregnancy.
