VBAC Birth Plan

33 weeks with #2, starting to think about birth plan. Hoping for a VBAC and wonder what other VBAC mom's found helpful/not helpful in their birth plan and actual labors. TIA!

Re: VBAC Birth Plan

  • I have no experience but am in the same boat so will be lurking to see what is said.

  • It's too late to implement this, but I exercised throughout my VBAC pregnancies (my first was my c-section, and I've had two VBACs so far), which I think probably helped prepare my body for labor better. The other major thing was that I had very supportive doctors, and if you haven't already, you should talk to your doctors about what types of interventions they'll be willing/unwilling to do and what the plan will be if you go past your due date. In my case, they said they wouldn't induce me, but they were okay with my going up to 42 weeks with monitoring/NSTs.

As far as birth plan, I didn't really have one aside from knowing I wanted an epidural, so I'm not much help there. Good luck!
  • I am in the same boat, but have no experience to share. My doctor said they won't let me go past 41 weeks. In my case, I had a c-section because my pelvic bones were too narrow and the baby was stuck. I guess they figure the longer I go, baby will be too big and the same thing will happen again. If I go that far, I don't want to be induced again, so we will just go ahead with the CS. Apart from that, I will probably get an epidural, but will otherwise just be going with the flow.
  • I'm trying for my first VBAC. I don't really plan on going in with a birth plan. I will just go with the flow. My OB said I can go till 41 weeks but I have a feeling I wont make it that far. I don't know that I want an epi but I won't rule it out either. I have never been in labour so I have no idea what I will want so I'm leaving my options open.

  • I wanted an epidural so I labored at home for the majority of the day. I went in the dr office for monitoring bc my contractions were 4-6 mins apart. Went back home and finished packing. My mw said to Come to hospital when I physically couldn't take the pain anymore. When I got there I labored on my side until I was 6 cm and I asked for the epi. I felt better but after a while my left side hurt so they refreshed the epi. I told them NO pitocin. My bag was bulging so they broke my water and things went quickly. I stopped around 9 cm and the mw suggested just a "whiff" if pitocin to send my cervix to 10 cm. I agreed. Within 30 mins I was ready to push! I pushed for 20 mins and out She came! Good luck and I'm praying for your vbac success!

  • Yeah, unlike the first time when I made a detailed birth plan and then it ended up not happening at all the way I thought, I am going to go in and see what happens. I hope to labor at home awhile so I can be mobile and stuff but I am a bit away from the hospital (lil over 45 minutes- longer if there is traffic) so I don't want to push it too much. I talked to my doctor at my appt. yesterday about general things:
    - instances in which she will induce for vbac (there weren't many)
    - reasons she would stop a vbac and go to c-section (concern over baby heartbeat etc)

I figure I'll talk about it in more depth at a later appt. - what she recommends as far as when to come into the hospital, any positions/strategies she knows of to help, hospital policy on monitoring baby and ability of mother to move around

Really though, I know this time that what happens is what happens.. GL
  • Luckily this time I had been exercising a LOT for the 18 months before getting pregnant. Have kept it up and feel immensely awesome compared to #1. My DR'S won't induce with chemicals at all, so either baby girl comes on her own or we do a scheduled c-section at 40-41 weeks...
