Flying with baby

Hey Mamas!
We are taking our first trip with the LO next month (he will be about 2 1/2 months old)  & will be flying from Chicago to New Orleans for a wedding. The flight is a little over 2 hours & we will have a rental car when we get there. Any advice on traveling/flying with a baby & what we should bring?

Obviously the car seat, but is the base needed? Stroller for airport or carrier? (stroller and car seat would be checked once we're at the gate, correct?)
I am BF but also supplementing with formula and will have my pump with me as well. Can I take pumped breast milk or liquid formula/baby water through security or will I have to buy it once we're there? Anything else you can think of?

Sorry to sound like a total FTM, but I just want to make sure Im prepared :)

Re: Flying with baby

  • We are flying to Boston next week. Our Chicco car seat is able to be installed without the base so check your manufacturers book! We are gate checking that and the drop in stroller part. We also bought the red gate check bags for them from Buy Buy baby- they are cheaper on Amazon so I'd recommend that. As for the plane itself, I will have her in my Boba wrap for the flight and a paci on hand. For take offs and landing they recommend infants "suck" to help with ears so either nursing her or the paci.

I have yet to research FAA on breast milk and formula since I'm 90% sure all I am taking is powdered formula we supplement with and my boob. I did purchase a Nuk single electric breast pump though so I don't have to haul my double. It's small enough but I can't speak to quality since I haven't used it yet- reviews online are mixed but if you have an FSA account, breast pumps are a covered cost. So are condoms and pregnancy tests (random fact for the win :-) ).

Good luck- I am nervous as hell!

  • I'm 99% sure you can take as much breast milk on the plane as needed
  • Yep you can certainly take as much breast milk as you need and water for formula if you plan on bringing that on too. It's considered medical so it's allowed on the plane. All they'll have to do is test the liquids in this machine at security check.

You'll have to put the car seat through the security belt and a TSA agent will swab your stroller and your hands.

I carried my son in my Moby wrap and they let me keep him in there when passing through security.

I traveled from Florida to Connecticut when he was three weeks old so the flight was just short of three hours. He did amazing and didn't cry at all.

Your LO will probably eat and then sleep through the flight. That's what mine did.

Just make sure to bring everything you need for the duration of the flight and then some. You never know if there might be a delay and at least you'll be prepared. Extra bottles, extra breast milk, extra diapers and clothes.

And whatever you do DON'T use the airplane water to rinse anything. Just ask for some bottled water or bring your own. Good luck. It's easiest to travel now when they're so little. You don't need to keep them occupied or entertained

  • DS1 is a frequent flier - I flew alone with him regularly. I curb check our luggage and the car seat and only take on what I need for the flight in a diaper bag. I wear him in my ergo, unless I'm bringing the stroller - if so the stroller gets gate checked. Even bagged the stroller has taken some abuse flying so I leave it home when possible. Nurse on takeoff and landing. It gets much harder when they get mobile, so enjoy traveling with them now.

  • I've seen before some crazy videos on this. Once you're at your destination, PLEASE inspect your car seat throughly!!!!

The videos I saw were of the workers treating the car seats like absolute shit, when putting them on the belts. To the point where they were almost broken, which of course now makes them no longer safe. Just be aware of this please. They can be extremely rough on your items.

  • Best advice I can give is feed in take off and landing it will help with their ears.

Yes! If possible, definitely gate check the car seat. DH just had his suitcase considered a total loss because they tossed it and cracked it badly, I'd be really nervous about what they might do to my baby's car seat! They're not careful at all.

  • I agree about gate checking the car seat and stroller.  When you're at the gate, ask if it's a full flight, too.  If it isn't, the gate agent may be able to move your seats and give you one for LO so you can actually use the car seat on the plane without having to pay for the seat for baby (we got lucky with this a few times when DS was little).  Otherwise, definitely wear your baby on the plane.  Keeps your hands free and helps soothe baby.

You can bring expressed milk or formula through security, but if you EBF and baby is with you, I don't see why you'd need it (unless you're going to need a bottle for baby once you're at your destination and won't have time to pump there).
  • Lots of things (we just got home from our Boston trip).

#1: make sure you check that you're well stocked in your diaper bag. And then check again. We were low on wipes and it sucks. Thankfully no poo until we landed and I has access to all the wipes I packed.

#2: Gate checking car seat/stroller. Be the biggest bitch and demand that they take your stuff down to the plane right then and there. I trusted the people at the gate and our car seat is currently in Chicago. MF'ers sent our CARSEAT that was supposed to be gate checked to another state. And baggage resolution didn't have an infant car seat. If we didn't have family with little ones who drove all the way to the airport at 11 pm we would have been screwed. They were a bunch of unhelpful, uncaring D-bags at the airport too. Still fuming from this. If they don't show up tomorrow, there will be hell to pay.

When I'm less angry I make have more advice.

Oh, and if you FF, you can take bottled water- it's deemed "medically" necessary. They just scan it.
  • Our first flight with DS1 was when he was 6 months old and we flew to London. 9 long hours. We had him in the stroller up until we checked our bags and checked the stroller. We then put him in a carrier. Security of course had to screen me by hand :( we bought a bag to put the car seat and stroller in as a checked bag itself. The flight out of Phoenix to London was an evening flight and he slept most of the time. Once we were landing he had the biggest blowout I've ever witnessed. So I'm in heathrow changing him by myself... The flight back was a morning flight and the longest day of my life. Sorry I'm being so negative, but flying with an infant sucks. There's no way around it. Hopefully since it's a short flight you will have better luck with your LO.

  • Thank you all so much for the advice and info, it definitely makes me a little less nervous. We fly pretty often, but this is the first time with the baby & I've never really payed attention to what parents do when they fly with their LO's.
