Football fans: Let's talk about Ray Rice.

I was so happy to see how many of you are football fans so let's go: Wanna hear your thoughts about the NFL's release of Ray Rice. Was letting him go from the Ravens too little too late? Do you think it was fair? I think they only let him go because they released that video on TMZ. I think he'd still be playing were it not for the nightmare PR that video created.

I wonder what would happen if he were in a normal job? If his poor fiancée/ wife isn't pressing charges, then could a person lose their job over something like this?

I do think the NFL did the right thing as these players are in a role model type position, but agree this should have been the first move.

I truly believe the team knew about and saw the video. I think they thought that no one would see the video. They gave him the ridiculous (ridiculous in that a 2 game suspension is a joke) suspension hoping that would keep things from airing. Ray Rice is/was their star. They had no intention to release him because that weakens their offense tremendously. The only reason they did was because of the PR nightmare that ensued.

Eta: I also think the NFL's new "harsher" punishment for domestic abuse is a result of this. I think that they were hoping it could help cover up what happened because the public sees that they are taking a "firmer" stance in the issue, therefore no reason to look into the events further because, ya know, a 2 game suspension really shows them! :-q

He should have been released when the picture of him dragging out his wife surfaced. They had to have known and probably did nothing because he was their star. If he was second string or practice squad he would have been released immediately.

This is one of the biggest reasons that I am not as big of a football fan as I used to be. The NFL is made of a bunch of thugs who have waaaay too much money and think they can, literally, get away with anything. The domestic abuse, drugs, murder in Aaron Hernandez's case, etc is ridiculous, and the fact that Goddell isn't doing much of anything makes the NFL a sad organization and the people the furthest thing from a role model for my son.

Just saw this on cnn and didn't get through the first page without getting pissed. His wife says, and I quote, "the media keeps making us relive a moment in our lives that we both regret." Why does she regret it? She didn't beat herself unconscious and then drag herself out of the elevator. Even if she yelled at him or smacked him or something, doing what he did is uncalled for. If dh did that to me he would never see his son again, I would divorce him in .5 seconds, and is put a restraining order against him. That shit is not ok.

Wonder if she'll dump his ass now that he won't be making millions every year to pay for her expensive jewelry. Her engagement ring is blindingly huge. And yes @jenlynne0624‌ her turning a blind eye to the situation just gives him license to do it again. The only thing she should be regretting is that she didn't break up with him the next day.

I was in a physically abusive relationship for four years. if someone had a video I could watch that showed me while I was getting my face beat up and kicked in the stomach so hard I would puke and lay in the fetal position until he finally got bored, it would have made things a lot easier for me to leave and stop making excuses about why I shouldn't. the situation may not be black and white, but the video is.

@steprozz‌ sorry you went through that. I grew up in an abusive house too and it sucks to be a part of. It's harder to leave that situation than people think but that video should leave her no other option. I doubt it was the first time that he hit her.

As far as he goes, I think the nfl has the duty to dismiss players who violently break the law. Most companies have a morality clause in place that dictates they would be let go if found guilty of a violent crime.

thanks guys. it's not something I ever talk about and I don't think I've ever even written it down into words. I just felt like I had to because I wasn't chastising her or trying to put her down or anything. I have been her. I have lived that. most women don't have the opportunity to see on tape right in front of their eyes what's being done to them. it would have been so powerful to have seen a video. it's like, if I was watching this of someone else I would be horrified, disgusted, angry, and sad. so why should it be ok for me to be that woman in the video. why shouldn't I feel that way for myself? it's always in there. no matter how conditioned you are to think no one will understand, you have no where to go, or even that you deserve it, it's always there that you know it's wrong, you know you don't deserve it, and you know you should leave. and I would hope her loved ones, people who truly love her, will support her and help her to realize that love does not conquer all, he will never change, and she deserves everything better for her life.

That type of statement shows an utter lack of understanding of what the cycle of domestic abuse does to the victim. It's nearly as bad as saying it's her fault that this happened.

I know that she isn't going to be able to wash her hands of him and walk out right now. it definitely doesn't work that way. maybe I see things differently than some because of my situation, which of course is absolutely not her situation. but I think I have to step away from this thread. now that I have chosen to put some of my story out there, I made this a trigger for myself. thanks for the love and support though y'all. even years after the fact, it still means a lot.

I read somewhere that the casino recently closed. Not sure if true or not but there was some speculation that that might be why this video just got leaked.

Also, I think it's more detrimental to domestic violence victims that they worsened his penalty after the video came out. they knew he hit her. They metered out their punishment. Then they found out how bad it was and made the punishment worse.

That just feeds into the same perception that if he didn't hit you hard enough to bruise, it doesn't "count". He hit his fiancé. End of story. He should have gotten the same punishment the first time the nfl heard about it. Not after they saw how "bad" it was. It was bad enough no matter if there was video or not.

What gets me is the video was recorded in Feb... She then married him 4 months later. Then the team suspended him.. The video came out.. They kicked him off the team. Then she defends him.
