Stay at Home Moms

s/o answering the phone

Were you one of those kids who would hide the back of the basement or in a closet and talk on the phone for hours?  I remember coming home from school and literally talking on the phone for hours until my mom came home.  Hours.  Then I would act like I hadn't talked to anyone and procede to chit chat with someone for a while longer.

DH and I use to talk on the phone while we were dating for hours on end.  We had a long distance thing going for a while though so there's that.  I also didn't get texting on my phone until like 3 years ago.  Having texting has seriously cut down on my need to chat.

So anyway, the point, were you always so phone phobic/shy or is this a more recent development?
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

Re: s/o answering the phone

  • As a teen, and in college, I did talk on the phone a lot.  My parents actually refused to get a cordless phone until we moved out of the house (I am 37).

  • No, I do not remember anyway.

I dated a guy that I talked to for hours at night, usually until morning.

I doubt I could do that now, as soon as a friend does the "So...how you been?", I get irrationally annoyed. No idea why, I would just rather have those long conversations in person.

  • I was phone obsessed as a teen!  I would even bring a quarter to call friends if I knew I was going to be out for awhile with my mom & it was potentially going to be boring.  I was a teen before cell phones so if you missed someones call & they made plans without you then you just sat at home.

  • I remember talking to my long distant boyfriend for hours every night. We would usually fall asleep on the phone (landline). Oh my parents hated it. I still talk on the phone a lot but only to certain people. Dh is not that person. He doesn't like being on the phone.

  • I'm maybe the odd one out...I like talking on the phone. I didn't get many phone calls when I was young. DH and I had a long distance relationship a few times in our dating time. We would spend hours on the phone talking. I mean hours. We would have movie dates over the phone.

I still don't get many phone calls, so most of the time I will answer. Unless we are eating, driving, or I can't get to the phone.

  • I also spent hours on the home phone every day until I could drive. SO and I dated in high school and our schools had different start times so we would call and leave long winded messages every morning before class. Now I hardly ever talk on the phone, love to text. Before DS was born I was an assistant at a brokerage firm so I spent a lot of the day calling clients, sometimes I liked it (when I knew exactly what I was talking about) and sometimes I felt pretty anxious (hearing crap like "you people" or option spreads).
  • I remember talking into the wee hours of the night even in my early 20s.  Sad it's all about texting now.

  • Did any of you have your own line?! My best friend did, thought that was SO cool when I was a kid/teen. It was also a big deal when we got call waiting and later…caller ID.
    I. Wish.  I was so jealous of girls who had their own phone line.

  • Yes!!! On the phone constantly from maybe 5th grade until 10th when I could drive (before the days of graduated licenses.)

My friends and I would have BEEPER wars where we would type in something like 5318008 - turn it upside down and it spells boobies :D

  • Always phone shy. Like, so shy that I don't even like to call and order pizza.
I always love to call to order pizza. Cause that means...pizza's coming :x

  • I didn't really like talking on the phone. DH and I had a long distance relationship for quite some time so we talked on the phone a lot. I never really loved talking on the phone with my friends. Myspace or FB messaging or texting was more of my preferred method of conversation.

I actually used to be super shy about ordering to a waitress or ordering food on the phone. Now I just dgaf and usually want food asap.

  • I definitely did not have my own line.  My mom would pick up the phone and listen occassionally just to see what we were up to or if I was still on the phone.  Oh and AIM...that brings some things back.

  • Yep, the minute I came home, I was on the phone. When DH and I first met, we spent HOURS on the phone. He would call me around 6am when he was working and we would talk all day long.

I have died every day waiting for you. Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years. And all along I believed I would find you, time has brought your heart to me. I have loved you for a thousand years. I'll love you a thousand more.
  • I spent a lot of time as a teen talking to friends and boyfriends, and also a lot talking to DH before we moved in together, as we lived a couple of hours away from each other before that.

Now I rarely talk on the phone, except to maybe my parents once or twice a week. I think it's not so much that I hate talking on the phone but more that (sadly, I guess) I don't really have anyone I want to talk to that much. I'll happily order a pizza, though, no problems there!
