2 Month Appt - Update

So I am thankful that DS is growing and seems very healthy but we had some challenges today at the Pedi. The doctor detected a heart murmur for the first time and we will need to go in for a cardiology appointment to see what is causing it. Also, he seems to favor turning his head to one side and is getting a flat spot on one side. The Dr called it Torticollis and we have our first PT appointment on Friday.

Has anyone else gone through either of these issues? I'm trying not to worry too much but of course the water works started in the visit today. I knew something was off because while the Dr was listening to his chest he was cooing and smiling insanely cute at her and she wasn't even cracking a smile.

***** We had our EKG and Echo done today for Liam and got a clear bill of health! It was an slight innocent murmur and no need to go back because he has a normal healthy heart the doctor said

My BFF's daughter had the issue with turning her head. She went to several PT appts and it's been corrected with no issues since. I'm sorry about the murmur, but hope it gets resolved soon!

Milo does the same thing with his head but I forgot to bring it up. Fuuuuck. I hope the heart murmur is easily addressed. Best wishes to you guys.

My DD1 had a heart murmur at her 1 month appointment and we were referred to cardiology for her. The murmur resolved itself by her 12 month appointment but we still had EKGs done.

DD2 had a murmur identified at her 1 month and 2 month appointments as well. We're switching insurances between Sept/Oct so I have to wait a bit to make the cardiology consult. Hopefully this one will resolve itself as well.

I'm sorry you're dealing with a heart murmur as well.

A good percentage of heart murmurs in babies clear up on their own as the babies grow. Those that don't, need surgery, BUT there are so many advances in pediatric cardiology, that it's amazing what they can do - i had my surgery over 30 years ago - kids these days don't even have a "zipper" as a result of the surgery (i do). Some they can even do laproscopically (sp?).

I had a hole that didn't resolve itself, and i went on to play a division one sport - it was terrible for my mother at the time, but it doesn't have to be a lifelong condition.

I pray that your little one is ok, and that it is resolvable on its own!

Sorry to hear you are dealing with this. I had a heart murmur when I was born and somewhere along the line it resolved itself. Hoping the same thing for your little one!

DS had a heart murmur detected when he was born in the hospital. Had an EKG and an echo cardiogram, and three weeks later were sent to the cardiologist for a follow up. The heart murmur was still there, but the cardiologist assured us that it wasn't anything she was very concerned about. She said most murmurs in babies will resolve themselves before their first birthday. We have another follow up when he is 6 months, and she told us she wouldn't be surprised if the murmur was completely gone by then. Hope this helps, and good luck with the PT!

Elias favors turning his head to the left, so we've been working to get him to turn to the right as well. I've been reading about that condition and I think it's something that will be corrected and end up ok! The heart murmur would scare me, too. But lots of PP seem to offer hope for that, so I'll keep you and baby in my thoughts and prayers.

It is good to hear that your daughter's murmur resolved itself in the first year! Hoping the same news for our LO's!

I asked why she would hear it now and why no one heard it before (even during our NICU stay for blood sugar issues) and she thought maybe it was a hole closing up on its own and now because it is smaller you can hear it more. I am hoping this is the case. She drew a bunch of pictures on the table paper but I'm not medical and most of it was lost on me. She mentioned it could be on one of the flaps if they fold over longer on one side or on one of the tubes that connects to the lungs.

I just hope they call me for the appointment soon. The faster we know what we are dealing with the better.

I hope your son continues to get good news on his murmur! So scary, it was the last thing on my mind of things that could be detected two months after birth! I was all concerned about the shots and how he would feel after.

Everybody said what I was going to. F had a murmur when he was born and did the EKG, they still detected it at his 1 month check up.

Sorry you have both of those issues going on at once. Even though, from what I'm told, most murmurs are just within the normal range and will resolve themselves, I know it's something that you still worry about.

Ack stuck in the box. Lots of people have already told you most murmurs resolve themselves but like PP said those that need intervention are a lot better off these days than 30 some years ago when I had my first two surgeries. I just had my third a few years ago and I was out of the hospital sooner than with my c/s with DD1. Something to ask about is having a pulse ox test done. This is a super quick, non invasive test that many are now calling to be part of all newborn screenings that can give you a lot of information about if the murmur is causing any imminent issues. Even though we had fetal echos done for each kid I requested this test in the hospital for the girls since I just know too many people who's cardiac issues weren't discovered as early as they could have been. Good luck hope your cardiologist appointment goes well and it's a begnin issue.

My second also had a murmur that cleared up by his first birthday. They said it was quite common. Prayers that this is the same.

My oldest son has an innocent murmur. They discovered it when he was about 18 months old. We went for an echocardiogram and EKG at the children's hospital. From there they determined it was a minor, innocent murmur and if perfectly healthy otherwise. It's so hard not to worry, but you will make it through. Fingers crossed and thinking of your LO!

I feel so much better after hearing all of the positive stories of innocent murmurs that have resolved themselves. Here's to healthy babies with strong hearts!!

Praying for that murmur! I'm glad they detected it so early though.

As for the flat head, DD has that as well but since she's only a month, we are trying to fix it on our own before her 2-month appt. She favors her left side so we switched the head of her crib so that for her to look out at us, she would have to look right. We also do exercises where we lay her down with her head by our knees and her feet up against our belly. Then we turn her head to her right and hold for 5 seconds (your knee will stop from turning her too far). We do that several times; basically trying to convince her that it's ok to be on her right side as well as stretching the ?ligament/tendon on that side of her neck.

It seems to be working. I wouldn't be surprised if the specialist recommended something like that as well.

My LO had a murmur detected at birth. We just had a follow up with the cardiologist on Tuesday and they can still hear it, but doctor really does not seem concerned. We go back when LO is six months and if they still hear it we go back when he is 1yr old. As others have said, they will watch it for a while. Most issues resolve on their own. Good luck!
