Pain medication?

I just got back from my family doctor who said I have strep throat. He prescribed me an antibiotic and also Hydrocodon for my pain. I know he's a doctor and wouldn't do anything harmful for my baby but the thought of taking a pain killer like hydrocodon scares me. Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

  • I would rather recover from a csec than have a really bad case of strep again. I have had very painful bouts of strep. Probably wouldn't hurt to double check with your OB on this one though.
  • Vicodin is what i normally take for my migraines. My dr said no during pregnancy.

  • This may sound ridiculous, but my mom was a yoga instructor, and she showed me lion's pose to help ease the pain of a sore throat. Beware, it looks a little crazy when you are doing it. If you don't feel comfortable taking the prescription pain meds, you could try this along with Tylenol for the pain. Is it an antibiotic as well though? That could be something you might need.

  • I think PPs have it right to ask yourself if you need it. Some people have really painful strep, when I had mono I was on Tylenol 3 (codeine) because swallowing wasn't something I could do without excruciating pain.

If you think you can manage without it until the antibiotics start working, I honestly wouldn't even fill the scrip. If you think you need it, ask your OB and then take it as directed and see if your pain is lessened as the infection goes away.

  • I have also been prescribed the same medication this pregnancy for severe headaches as well as severe hemorrhoids. I take it when I feel necessary but no more than that. I have had 2 prescriptions and both have over half the pills left because I try not to take it when I can help it. That being said, both my doctors did say this was the safest rout to go in pain meds are needed while pregnant.
  • My OB ok'd it & other opiates for pain issues (lower lumbar fractures & more) . I understand the concern but pain is something you should not have to be in if you don't have to.

Double check with your OB. Ask them to explain it to you like you are five & together you can weigh risk/benefit together.

  • I take Vicodin for migraines and both my neurologist and OB said it was fine. I get migraines 2-3 a week and treatment options during pregnancy are very limited. If you need it, take it.

I've been given hydrocodone while pregnant, and it's fine. I've also had strep, and it was so painful I couldn't even swallow my own saliva, I had to spit it out into a cup. It was excruciating, even with antibiotics.

I've taken Hyrdrocodone during my last pregnancy for severe back pain. It was necessary to be able to walk. That being said, does strep hurt enough to necessitate it? I don't know, I've never had strep. If it makes you uncomfortable and you can deal with the pain, then skip it.
YOU'VE NEVER HAD STREP?!?!?!!  Oh my, lucky girl!!!!!

    Nope. Is it like Laryngitis?

Imagine that you have swallowed hot coals and they become your tonsils at the back of your throat. Then they tell you try to drink as much water as possible when you can't even fathom swallowing. Plus you have a wicked headache, fever, and sometimes nausea(I think that might just me. I get nauseated when I have a fever.) I have passed out before because of strep. Used to get it everytime I went for the first swim of the season but it tapered off as I grew up. I have had some very severe cases of strep. Like I said. I would rather deal with the recovery from a csec than deal with the worst of my strep infections.

  • Strep throat is brutal. I used to get it all the time. So I had my tonsils removed. I hope you feel better soon!

  • Ugh when I had strep as a kid it felt like I had a massive ball in my throat every time I swallowed and it hurt like hell.

OP, I've been on methadone for all of my pregnancies (almost done with it now!) and besides 3 tortuous weeks in the nicu with our second there were no long term side effects. I would ultimately trust your doctor but I've seen and heard of many who have had to take painkillers on occasion without issue.
