Trouble TTC

Metformin Question

Ok so this may be a silly question, but this is unusual for me (I apologize in advance if this is a little TMI):

I just started Metformin. I am taking 500mg/day, stepping up to 1000mg/day tonight, and 1500mg/day next Wednesday.  A day or two after my first dose, I started spotting very lightly (just a little bit of pink discharge). That has pretty much continued this week, on and off.  I am on CD68 (long cycle, yes, but my RE knows this and I'm waiting another 2 weeks to start Provera).  I don't ovulate on my own, so my cycles are ridiculously long. So here's my question: Can the Metformin cause spotting (I didn't see that as a side-effect)? Could Metformin alone regulate my cycles (I doubt it, but you never know)? Or is this just coincidental spotting that just happens to coincide with the start of Metformin?

I'm not too concerned about it since I have no other symptoms of anything (along with weekly BFNs), but I'm just curious if anybody else has had similar experiences and can give me some insight.

  • I started metformin on CD 50!!! Within 2 days I started my period...I only took it 2 months but it alone regulated my cycle to 28 days
  • I've noticed something similar since I've been on Metformin but haven't had a chance to check with my doctor.  My spotting usually happens up to two weeks before then tapers off right before CD1.
  • I didn't notice any spotting, but it can mess with your stomach. I would call and ask your dr if I you are concerned.
  • The same thing happened to me when I started taking it. Mt doctor said it was probably just AF making an appearance finally. It took me a couple month to get use to taking it, I would always have an upset stomach, but now I am totally fine taking it. It did the trick for me, AF would only come every 3rd or 4th month for me and would only last a day or two. Now on the Met, I get it every 30 days, on the day and last 5 or 6 days. Good luck to you!
  • Thanks ladies! Spotting continued to get heavier and today is officially CD1. This is the first time in about 6 months I haven't had to trigger with Provera (although I am taking 5 other daily pills).

  • Met has me ovulating on CD13 which never happened before. I'm so glad it worked to bring on AF for you. A lot of ladies' cycles regulate after adding Met. I'm newly on it- but am impressed that I actually ovulated at a normal day in my cycle.
