Gift For New Mom?

I just found out my college roommate is being induced on Monday at 37 weeks - she lives close by.... I want to visit obviously but will tell her to tell me when she's ready.

BUT What should I get as a gift? Do I send something to the hospital? To her house? And do I bring something the first time I meet the baby as well??

I have heard that you should offer a meal.. Dinner at the hospital or lunch or something like that. Most hospitals have crappy food.

I think even of she invites you once she is home dinner is still a great option. Maybe a casserole or something like that.

  • Whenever we've gone to visit friends who just welcomed a baby to the world we always bring a gift for the baby.  Not always something huge but at least a little something.  I think the last one we brought a nice blanket and she is almost 4 and still carries it around all the time.

  • After my first baby, people typically brought us a meals when they would come to visit, which was awesome. Something small for the baby is nice too, but I loved it when people brought food. My DH conveniently forgot how to cook after we got married, and the last thing I had the time or energy for while recovering from a c-section was cooking.
  • I would offer to pick up something on the way to visit (food, coffee, etc) and bring a gift for the baby.

  • Food, definitely food. A casserole is always good. And some quick & easy snacks (granola bars, cheese sticks, pudding cups, etc).

  • There's a reason so many people are saying food! It really is a lifesaver to have one less thing to worry about when you have newborn. And a meal in a container that doesn't have to be returned is even better :)

I always make a lasagna in a foil pan and drop it by their house about the first week they are home. I also include a bottle of wine. I do it in the foil pan because not only is it easy clean up, but also because it can be frozen and reheated in.  I include directions for how to bake, freeze, and reheat.

Lasagna seems like a lot for two people, but I can't tell you how many friends have said so specifically they appreciated the lasagna because they practically lived off it the first few days after dropping it off.
Wine--love it! So many people have been judgmental when I say I plan to start drinking wine again right after baby is born, so having a friend drop off wine along with the food would be great particularly because it would say "I support your drinking wine." =)
    It's a girl! Due November 22, 2014
  • I LOVE to cook so my gift to new moms is always a big homemade meal. My cousin just had a baby and I made a big chopped salad, home made bbq mealballs, awesome cheesy potatoes, and an apple crisp for dessert: )

I bring it in tin disposable pans so they can freeze and eat when they want to/dont feel like cooking
  • Thanks ladies! Food it is!
