Fetal heart rates?

I'm 7 weeks today, and we found out last week (at 6wk, 3days) that we're having twins! Both babies had heart rates of 121, which my OB seemed happy with, but I'm guilty of googling things, and have read of vanishing twin syndrome. Of course, now I'm terrified. It's my first pregnancy, after 6 months of TTC with an REI. We go for weekly ultrasounds to monitor growth, and I'm just wondering if any of you have info as to what the heart rates should be each week? I'll be 7w3d at next scan, and just wondering what number to hope for?

Re: Fetal heart rates?

  • As the embryo develops, the heart rate will increase. Sometimes you don't even hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks and it is common for them to be lower just starting out.

  • At that age I think that's a great HR! I think HR peaks around 10-12 weeks and then settles down a bit, IIRC.

  • Those are perfectly normal heart rates. They will likely fluctuate during your entire pregnancy. Do not stress about a specific number.

  • At 7 weeks those are great heart rates. Also, something to keep in mind is that once a heart beat is present the risk of vanishing twin goes way down. And it continues to fall every week

  • There's a huge range of heart rates and it changes as the pregnancy progresses.

D & L are here at 34 weeks 4 days by vaginal and breech delivery on 11/19/2013
Two healthy boys weighing 4 lbs 15 ozs and 4 lbs 5 ozs.  Only 6 days in the NICU and getting bigger, stronger and cuter every day!
  • Thank you for the feedback. This is all so new to me, and I'm in the shock/thrilled/disbelief/excited/no-words-to-describe-it stage right now! Trying hard to not think about all the things that could go wrong, and banning myself from Google for a while
  • When I found out I was having twins, both of their heart rates were in the lower 100s. Now I'm 35 weeks pregnant and they both are fine and have heart rates in the 130s. If the doctor is happy with your results, try not to worry too much.
  • I was never told their heartrates until 10 weeks....I wouldn't be concerned.
