Which stroller/carriage are you going with?

I didn't end up going with a travel system because I wanted to get a convertible car seat to save money so we still need a stroller. Any good recommendations for baby strollers? I don't need anything fancy, just something safe for a newborn and somewhat economically reasonable. Thanks!

Re: Which stroller/carriage are you going with?

  • We have the chicco system (cortina stroller and key fit 30 car seat).  I really like the stroller- it is super easy to maneuver, etc.  It is a little bulky so it does take up more trunk space, which can be a concern for folks with smaller cars.

I've heard great things about the Baby Jogger City Mini- easy to use, more compact when it is folded, etc.  You usually can find the previous year's model on sale for less than $200.  Do you have a baby store near by that carries a wide selection of strollers?  That really is the best way to decide b/c you can play around with each one and figure out which will work best for you.

I though hard about getting a Baby Jogger City Select before our first and decided against it b/c I wasn't sure if we were definitely going to have a second so it seemed like a lot to spend for one kid.  In retrospect, I wish that I would have invested in it b/c our older son will ride in a stroller and we could make it a double. So definitely think about your current and potential future use!

  • We just got our Baby Jogger City Mini and a KeyFit 30. (The stroller will only fit infant car seats with the proper adapter).

I have to say the City Mini is the best thing since sliced bread. It folds up one handed and is so light, you can unfold it one-handed too. The thing is 16 lbs (sans car seat or kiddo). I'm super pumped to use it.  I was pushing/maneuvering it around the apartment with one-finger!

We are city parents though, so these things are extremely important to us. You'd have to check with the manufacturer (and recommendations from your pediatrician), about when you can put the baby in the stroller without the carseat since you won't be able to fit the convertible in this one. (FYI, i did a lot of research on this and most regular strollers aren't compatible with anything besides infant car seats, up to 30-35 lbs).

  • Which ever stroller you get, make sure it lays completely flat if you are planning to use it during the newborn phase.  Most strollers are made to accommodate the infant seat because it provides the best support for a newborns floppy head.  In addition many of the manuals for the strollers say not to use them in the upright position until baby can hold their head up on their own, which is some where between 4-6 months.

We have a chicco stroller that we used with DS1. It laid completely flat but we mostly used it with the infant seat. It folded easily, but it really was bulky and pretty heavy. Took up too much space in the truck of our accord.  But it was great for the broken pavements that are all over the place here in Texas.

  • We have a City Mini, too.  I completely love that thing.  It's so easy to use.  Opens/closes one handed, light as anything, easy to steer one handed, and totally doable for short jogs (It's definitely not a jogging stroller, but I've taking it jogging many, many miles on bike paths).  The only downfall I ever saw with it was that it doesn't have a parent cupholder, but we got an after-market "parent console" that velcros onto the handle for that.  Problem solved.

Like PP said, though, if you're not getting an infant carrier, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to use most strollers right off the bat with a newborn.  The City Mini has an adapter that you need to make it work with (most) infant carriers, but check with your pedi about when it's okay to put an infant directly into a stroller.

  • What's your budget?
I have a City Mini and Chicco KeyFit30, but you would prob benefit from a stroller that has a bassinet attachment. UppaBaby Vistas are crazy popular here in my city, if you're willing to fork over the $700+ for it.

  • Thanks everyone! I'm thinking $100-$150.00? But, I'd probably try to find one second hand...that's why I'm trying to get an idea of some good ones before I go out hunting in the consignment shops.

  • City Mini for me.  I rented one and loved it for DS1.  I'm so glad to be using it this time around.
  • We had the City Mini with our first too and I love it.

This time around we've picked up a Contours Options Elite.  It's currently on route back to Canada with my coworker that picked it up, so I can't comment yet on how much I love it.

  • We got the City Mini GT and a car seat adapter to use with our Graco Snugride so that she can use it sooner.
  • We got the Baby Jogger City Versa with DS. You can find it on sale for around $225 nowadays on Albeebaby or Pishposhbaby- easy as pie to fold, parent or forward faces, can attach a carseat or bassinet, huge basket. I got a Bumbleride Indie Twin NIB on Craigslist for my main double, and plan on getting the Uppababy rumbleseat to attach to the Versa for a quick-n-dirty double.

In general, I'd stay away from Contours, Graco, Baby Trend or Chicco strollers. These brands aren't known for ease of use or durability (though Graco and Chicco make some fabulous carseats). In your price range, look for Baby Jogger or Britax, though you can snag some great deals on used luxury strollers on Craigslist or swap sites (Uppababy, Bugaboo, etc). Fabric can always be washed, so I'd opt for a used quality product over a brand-new item of lesser quality. Kids are hard on strollers and you don't want to sacrifice here if you plan on using yours a lot.
  • Graco lightweight to go with our Graco Click Connect infant seat.

  • We are getting the Baby Jogger City Select stroller and Britax B-Safe car seat.  I like how the Select can be used as a single or a double.  This is our first, but we plan on trying for number two when this one is about a year so we're trying to think ahead.

  • Have you considered baby wearing vs. getting a stroller? I loved wearing my DS when he was little and we hardly used a stroller. If you are dead set on a stroller, PP have given you some great options - just make sure whatever you get reclines flat for a newborn.

  • We're getting the uppababy vista. It does have a hefty price tag but you get so much for your money. First off, It comes with a bassinet and a toddler seat. You can also use the bassinet as a bed for the baby for the first few months so that eliminates the cost of a cosleeper or other bed side sleeping device. You can also add attachments so you can carry up to three kids on it! Where I Iive we walk everywhere, so you need a great stroller but I guess how much you spend really depends on how much use you will get out of the stroller.
  • We have a City Mini GT and love it.

  • I got the graco modes click connect, I liked that there was the option of rear facing the seat and it was simple to fold/ change positions
  • We like our City Mini and I plan to wear baby #2 until they are old enough for a double stroller. I wore DD for about 6 months but she did start going in the stroller around 4 mos.

  • We, too, decided to skip the infant seat and went with a convertible. We plan to babywear mostly but we also received three (!) different strollers: a gently used UppaBaby from my sister-in-law, a Chicco Echo, and a badass vintage pram :) I am ignorant of the UppaBaby as I hadn't even heard of it before we were gifted one but I like the Echo's portability and size for an older baby. The pram is mostly for novelty and trips around the neighborhood :)

  • I was torn between the Britax B-Agile and the City Mini. I went with the City Mini.  Every mom I know loves it, and the Britax is better for taller parents ( I am not tall).  I love that it is super
easy to use, opens/closes one handed, is reasonably light.  I will be buying the adapter to use along with the car seat we purchased.

I got mine at my baby shower, but you may want to check the mom-to-mom sales for a used one.  I think there are usually a lot of those sales in the fall at churches and community centers.

  • We went with the Graco Modes Click Connect stroller. It's pretty awesome because you can flip the seat around and turn it into a carriage. We bought it used and didn't get the car seat with it, which is fine because it really doesn't need on even though it has the option to use one with it. It is super bulky though, so it will take up our entire trunk space, but that's fine I think it's worth it!

We're also getting a Versa, can't wait! I just picked up a used BOB Revolution on Craigslist for $75.
  • We went with the britax b ready and love it!
