help playing with LO

Ok moms,  this seems to be the one area I am lacking.  Was talking with DC yesterday about LO and she is laughing and giggling at DC.  I cannot get her to giggle or laugh at home.   we have a few toys around the house but am looking at getting her some more.  what I have is the piano play mat, an exersaucer, rattles,  a few soft crinkle toys, some chimes and a sophie.  I am thinking about getting some blocks for her as well.  Her closet doors are mirrored so we do sit in front of that periodically.

I am starting to feel bad because I just do not know how to play with a child this young.  HELP!!!!  any other toys you would suggest?

Re: help playing with LO

  • It sounds like you have a lot of fun things for her! My LO usually only laughs when someone's interacting with her. For example, she loves peek a boo when I lightly wave a blanket over her face then pull it up (kind of like a parachute is probably a good way to describe it). She also loves funny noises and when I "eat" her nose or ear.

I agree that you need to try to do things to make your LO laugh and smile. Ellie cracks up when I blow raspberries on her cheek right next to her ear. She loves when I pick her up and dance to the Disney Pandora station, "eat" her toes, and talk to her in funny voices. She also likes when I make up songs with her name in them. Try acting goofy with her and see if that works.

This! DS loves when I play "bonk" with him. I say bonk and I tap his nose with mine. He thinks it's hilarious!!!

  • Fiona laughs if we kiss /raspberry her belly and pretend that we are eating her feet nose etc. also making huge kissy noises works. Also animating her teddy and dolls with voices to make them interact with her works. Any pets on the house? Fi screams and laugh at our dog and turtles.
  • My husband gets her to laugh by mimicking her squeals and grunts. I just kiss her and kiss her some more.

  • Yeah I think our LOs laughs come more from social interaction with or without toys, but not really from toys alone. And I think something about repetitiveness helps too. Like she won't laugh and the first tickle or raspberry but if I keep doing it and sometimes wait in between, I think the anticipation of it makes her laugh more. Or with a toy, I'll have it "fly down to her" with funny noises. Over and over and over again.

  • His toys don't make my LO laugh. I do though! Try silly faces, silly voices, tickling, anything really. He loves when I'm goofy.
This.  For example, I did the hokey pokey dance the other day (it was on Pandora radio) and I never heard my LO laugh so hard.  He also finds our animals (dog and cat) quite entertaining and funny.

  • I can only rarely get my LO to laugh at me. I try everything, silly faces/noises, singing, tickling, raspberries, toys, "flying" etc. and it rarely works. At first I thought he just must not like me that much, but really I think it's the opposite. He smiles the most at me and always looks for me when he hears my voice, and tries to get me to get him from other people if he sees me. I think he's just is like, "oh it's my mommy just being my mommy!" If that makes any sense.

Just keep trying what you're doing. That's what I'm gonna do. And in the meantime, I look forward to the day when I make LO laugh the most.
  • mine does silent laughter. Big open smile/laugh but no noise lol. Laughs are rare.

I have found that she likes zooming in and out. So i'll hold her and then zoom her face to something (the dog is her favorite) and she laughs then i zoom out. or Pushups above her. stuff like that.
  • I don't know if this is a British thing.... But we have stacking cups (very cheap toy!) and she loves them! It's very rare I will be able to stack them right up before they've been knocked over and LO howls with laughter. The game only lasts around 5minutes, but it's a lovely 5mins :)

As others have said, generally toys alone won't get a laugh, it's me interacting and being dramatic that gets the giggles! Kissing/eating feet, raspberries on her cheeks, silly noises, pretending the cuddly toys are going to get her etc
  • I do have a lot of face time with her,  she does grin real big when I do raspberries on her belly and eat her neck or feet. she grins when I sing to her and loves to play patty cake and the bumble bee song.  She has laughed once when Gammy was holding her and the dog licked her face, I was in the other room pumping and was so sad cause by the time I got in there she had stopped... I just cant get her to laugh at me.  I guess she will in her own due time.

  • Mirror time gets Levi to smile, other than that pretty much what everyone else has stated: tickles on the tummy, rasberries on tummy or cheek, I lay him flat and act like I'm going to fall on him / get close to his face he giggles and pumps his legs and arms.  He laughs when the dogs walk by or bark, or make sudden moves.  He giggles at peekaboo, he giggles most at his brothers who are giggling and making faces for him.
  • Yea, Isla loves clothes over her face.  Cracks her up.

  • I've noticed that J gets much more goofy at bedtime. That is when we usually get the most laughs. DH making faves at him is usually a guaranteed giggle.

Ass far as interaction, we stack blocks, bang things together, and sing songs.

  • mine smiles all the time but laughs are rare! so far, only quick, sudden movement makes him giggle. (us, not him!!!!) my MIL was holding lo and my bil hopped very quickly towards him making silly noises. crazy laughter from lo! dh was standing back and then 'rushed' right up to LO who was on the changing table with me holding him. then back, and forward very quickly again. laughter :)
