Cloth Diapering

Intro and diaper rash help needed!

Hi Ladies,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster from August 14. I know you ladies are a wealth of CD information so I'm hoping you can help me. We have been using prefolds and covers for the past 5 weeks without any issues, but this morning it looks like DD has a rash on the inside of her upper thighs and crotch area - not on her butt at all. There are no bumps, just looks bright red and irritated. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Our wash routine is cold rinse, hot wash with tide just below the 1 line, and another cold rinse. Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Was she in a wet diaper for a long time? Does it get better with a little air time? If so, make sure you're patting dry each change and check her often.

You can use a little barrier cream too, like CJ's. Just be sure her skin is dry before putting it on.

  • Are you BF? Have you eaten anything acidic in the last day or so?
  • @rugbymama - We change about every 2 hours, but she did sleep a good 4 hour stretch last night. I put some CJ's on it and she's in a disposable right now.

@freezorburn - I am BF, but I don't think I've had anything acidic recently. Could it be dairy related?

Do you ladies think I should do a hot water strip just in case?

You would need to eliminate dairy for at least a month or longer to figure out if you are dealing with a dairy sensitivity, and there would likely be other signs, like indigestion, maybe lots of spit up. I'm not really sure because I tried eliminating dairy (and many other things) and it turned out not to be the case for us. There are a few people here dealing with dairy sensitivity or allergy and they will probably tell you that their LOs had other symptoms in addition to a mild rash.

So before you go down that road, I agree with PP that sometimes babies just get rashes. Diet can be a factor. You can keep a food journal if you think it would help. You can look up the pH of common foods online, there are a lot of websites that have this information available. Here's one: https://www.foodscience.caes.uga.edu/extension/documents/fdaapproximatephoffoodslacf-phs.pdf

Note that a lot of fruits are quite low in pH. Their natural sweetness tends to mask the acidity, but that's one category of foods to watch out for.
  • No reason to worry, sometimes baby's get a rash. Cj's is cloth safe so you can use it with your cloth. One rash is not a reason to change everything you eat, how you wash. Just watch it, if it comes back look for a pattern is when it happens that will tell you a lot.

  • Thanks for all the advice, ladies! We've been using CJ's and it looks much better today!

  • F just had this. CJs is doing OK with it but I noticed after I started making sure to wipe it down using a wipe solution and then patting it dry, then applying CJs it cleared up. I think it was from being against pee for awhile without properly wiping it up
