Formula Measuring

edited September 2014 in June 2014 Moms
Ok, so I never thought to ask about this with C when she was on formula, but it's sticking in my mind with Charlie. When I make a six ounce bottle, I use six ounces of water. But that plus the powder makes almost 7 ounces of actual formula that my child is eating...so is that a six ounce bottle or a seven ounce bottle? How do you measure? I'm sure it will be different if you pre-mix all your formula at the start of each day in a picture, or if you use ready to use.

Re: Formula Measuring

  • We premix 16 Oz batches in a blender bottle and just pour from there. But I get how it's maddening. Before I started premixing, Hubs made that observation- 2 ounces of water plus a scoop of formula makes a 2.5-3 ounce bottle

  • I voted the first option because with the air bubbles and little foam that forms when you mix it, I feel like the actual amount of drinkable formula is still 6 oz.
  • I count 6 oz of water plus powder equals a 6oz bottle although I contemplate this probably more than I should.

  • I was wondering this as well!  I consider it the first option, made it easier for me to keep track of.

  • Can I build on this and ask how many ounces everyone's babies are eating each day? I know all babies are different but I feel like my LO is eating a ton! She typically eats 34-36oz a day.

  • I am EBF but I am curious about pre mixing formula. Do you put it in the fridge and then warm it up for each feeding or does baby drink it cold. I only give formula here and there but I am sure at some point I will be using it more. Oh and I voted 6oz bc I think that since it is only 6 oz of water the powder does add foam and bubbles.

    @AandJ28‌ B eats 25-30 oz a day.

@Cherylwang‌ if you premix formula you have to refrigerate it. whether you want to heat it up every time you pour a bottle is up to you and LO. I get my boys used to drinking it straight from the fridge because it's easier for us and they don't really care. some babies are picky though and want it heated up or at least room temp.

edit because I have no idea how I came up with those ounces lol
  • @nutmegs8, I would still count it as 30oz

  • I mix by 2 or 4 ounces. I call them 2.5 and 5 because even after I let it settle it if I mix separately to avoid bubbles it still makes an extra .5-1 ounce. I reason that the powder adds volume to the already 2.5 ounces of water. I think maybe they intend you to put in the powder and then add water to 2 ounces... but that leaves way too much room for error.
  • @AandJ28‌ I'm also interested in that question because I feel mine eats too little. She's 12 weeks, 11lbs, and only averages 20oz a day.
  • I voted the first option. We don't make a big batch for the day, though (probably should) so I see how that'd be confusing.

Stella is 10 weeks and eats around 30 oz/day I think? I've never actually tracked it but that's just my guess.

@CrysW08‌ - All babies are different. So judging by size and amount they eat is really not the best scale. MJ is 16 weeks on Friday. I weighed her at a boutique that has a scale on Saturday, and fully clothed she only weighed 11.2lbs. She's way smaller & eats less than what other moms are reporting about their LOs but she's weeks older than them too. So I can never compare stats. She is otherwise healthy and the pediatrician isn't concerned so neither am I. If your LO wasn't getting enough to eat, believe me, she would be letting you know!

  • I pour the water in first (only she is eating 2-4oz) and then add the powder which is a level scoop for our formula so wherever it ends up it ends up, but it usually stays where the water ends up.

My LO is 12 weeks today and eats 12-14oz a day and is 9lbs 10oz lol. It just all depends on the baby, each one is different, as long as you are feeding your LO when they want it and not forcing them to eat when they dont want it (my husband does this) then dont worry! =]
  • I voted the second option. I had spent a lot of time wondering about this too, then one day actually read the instructions on the formula can. It says that the volume as prepared (2 oz water and one scoop powder) equals 2.5 oz. Good enough for me.
  • I pre-mix on the weekends but during the week my Mom prefers to make bottle as needed.  I voted for the first option.

I've never tried to give him a bottle straight from the fridge because I figured it'd give him a tummy ache.  Is this something many of you do?  I usually do room temp or heated.

AJ eats between 28-32 oz per day.  He will be 15 weeks on Friday. (Is it bad I just had to look at a calendar and count that up? I've been saying he's X months or X 1/2 because most people have trouble converting weeks to months)

  • I EBF but I've returned to work and we're going thru my freezer stash pretty quickly. I send LO to daycare with 3-3 oz bottles of BM and 1-4 oz bottle of formula. I voted the first choice although I'm new to the formula thing. Eli drinks all 3 oz of BM but left an ounce in the 4 oz bottle of formula. Baby math FTW!

@CrysW08‌ my LO eats an avg of 20 oz daily too. Although I have no idea what he weighs now, he's 15 weeks today. I was concerned I was under feeding him so gave him 4 oz bottles of BM, and he downed 3 oz and finished the last 1 oz @ the following feeding. He seems full and content so I don't force more ounces into him.
