Cloth Diapering

Terrible terible TERRIBLE diaper rash! Please help!

So we switched to CD due to skin issues (major eczema goin' on around here). Within two days LO's bum was clear-I don't have a huge stash right now so I ran out of diapers. One time in a sposie and he was raw again. Not to mention he he literally pooped.all.day.long. today...it was like the diapers were making it worse! I put him back in a sposie and SMOTHERED him in desitin all night and for bedtime. He still has to do sposies at daycare though.

Does anyone else have this issue? Should I switch to a different diaper? Right now we are doing pockets. It's breaking my heart to see his bottom so raw :'(

There are several companies that make hypoallergenic disposables. Those might be worth a try. We have had good experiences with Huggies Pure & Natural and Bambo Natural. I'm sure there are others.

  • So he's ok in cloth but because you still need to use disposables sometimes you are trying to find a brand that want bother him? I would start with honest or seventh gen.

Why don't you work on getting more cloth and call your pediatrician to get a note that he has to have cloth diapers d/t reactions?

I like this idea. Flour sack towels are 5/$5 at Walmart. And covers. Insanely cheap cloth option

  • Sorry I didn't mean to be so confusing. I guess what I mean is,  has anyone else had a bad diaper rash while using cloth? Idk what to put on it except desitin and I can't  use it with my CD :(

Use a liner with the desitin, leave him diaper-less for a while when home, idk if @Chickypoo2468‌ 's favorite stuff, Waxelene I think, would help.....use old t-shirts as diapers with non-CD safe creams and don't worry if it damages the absorption of the t-shirt. Diaperwreckers has good info on cd in dc, look up your state to get an idea of how to get your lo in cloth fulltime.

  • If we get a bad diaper rash we either use a fleece liner or disposables for non CD safe creams. (I've been a rebel and used non cd safe cream with flaps and prefolds too. Shhhh don't tell anyone!)

I've also had great results with lanolin - greenmountaindiapers advocates for it as a cd safe cream! It works so fast! I have tried waxelene, but my son reacted to it... So idk.

  • My baby didn't get a big rash with cloth, but when he did...I used coconut oil. I've also used cd safe cream, which is OK. ... But I prefer coconut oil.

  • Honestly I have some cheap prefolds that I use just for diaper rash days.  They have a different color along the edge than all my other prefolds so I can tell them apart.  We get rashes often because my little girl is on formula that causes sticky acid poop and it burns her butt over time even when I am diligent with a barrier method.  You could do the same with flour sacks for even less money.

  • I still don't understand. Are the disposables causing the rash? If so, get a different sposie and ask your pedi for a note saying you can't use them.

  • Your LO could also be experiencing a food allergy that causes diaper rashes from poop. I'm mobile and can't see if you have a ticker. How old? Does he eat BM or solids? Just the fact that he was pooping all day could contribute to a raw bum. I would slather on cream (use a liner if it's not CD safe), change frequently, do diaper free time, and make sure you pat dry before you put the next one on. Any chance you're using disposable wipes that may be contributing? They also have sensitive wipes that may help. Or use reusable/cloth wipes with water only.

Sorry my advice is all over the place, but you definitely have a lot of options to try to figure the rash out.

  • It sounds like you're saying the disposables are causing the rash, correct? I would ditto on trying to get a doctors note for daycare saying he has to use cloth. Maybe take some in to show them. I've read a lot of people say they were the first the daycare had.

You could try hybrids, like flips or grovia, with the disposable inserts, although they aren't the cheapest option.

I've been using the green tube all-natural Bordreaux's buttpaste. Sometimes with a liner, usually without. It has zinc, so the potential for staining, but I haven't had any (yet).
