Cloth Diapering

New here :)

Hi ladies, I've been lurking here for a couple months and I'm almost ready to start CD! I have a few questions if you don't mind ;;)

My LO is a little chunk :) at 5 months he's already 18lbs with beefy little thighs (EBF).

I'm mainly looking at Best Bottoms, Blueberry, Capri and Thirsties in AI2s or covers with a few prefolds and fitteds (maybe Kissaluvs?).

How are these brands with chunky little thighs?

Do prefolds vary much by brand or are they pretty similar across the board?

Do onsies fit easily over CD?

I'm going to get new detergent and butt cream, is there anything else a noob should be prepared for?

What is a good sprayer to get or are they not really necessary?

Sorry for all the questions, none of my girlfriends have ever CD.

Aaaaand here's my cutie :x

Re: New here :)

  • My baby is four months and 20+ pounds. Blueberry covers are the biggest and we mostly have those. We have some best bottoms too and I really like them but the rise is getting a little short. I am a gmd prefold fan girl, but plenty of people like the other brands and also flats.

You will probably want a sprayer once you start solids but you can certainly get by without one. Scrape with a dollar store spatula or dunk and swish instead.

  • Onesies generally fit easily over CDs, they have a lot of stretch.

Prefolds vary a lot in size options, but IMO any prefold that is 4x8x4 layers is about the same. Some are supposedly softer, etc. but I have some bummed prefolds, which are the most expensive and some no brand Indian cotton ones from Nickis, which are pretty much the cheapest, an they seem the same to me.

Sprayers are a matter of preference. I don't use one, and no one I know IRL uses one, but it seems like they are preferred by a lot of people .

How are these brands with chunky little thighs? As much as I love Best Bottoms, they aren't great for chunkier babies.

Do prefolds vary much by brand or are they pretty similar across the board? Definitely don't get gerber.  GMD is really popular, and nicki's/imagine.

Do onsies fit easily over CD? I buy clothes that fit my baby, rather than by looking at the suggested age.  My 2 year old just outgrew her 6 month shorts, my 3 month old is wearing 6 month onesies.  It just varies.

I'm going to get new detergent and butt cream, is there anything else a noob should be prepared for? What is a good sprayer to get or are they not really necessary? I have the BG sprayer and like it.  I wouldn't CD without a sprayer.

  • Thanks for the input!

I thought about CD since I was pregnant but decided to wait until LO was a little bigger so I could skip the NB stage. I'm glad I waited, the first couple months turned out kinda rough, but I'm ready now and super excited to get started!
