Someone I know just had a baby a month ago and had a stroke!!!

How terrifying! I guess she is ok but I didn't realize how common this could be. She didn't take the best care for herself while pregnant. Smoked throughout her pregnancy and had GD. She must not have followed a good diet cuz was always drinking Mountain Dew. I know those factors play a part in it but I still feel bad for her and her family. So hopefully all you ladies are taking good care of yourselves. I definately don't want to hear of this happening to anyone else.

  • My husband has a coworker whose wife had a stroke after her first baby. As far as I know she had a healthy pregnancy and delivery. They had left the hospital and it was several days afte rshe gave birth that she had the stroke. She's ok but it was really scary for a couple says. It scared the crap out of my husband too. I guess hers was a blood pressure thing and if they had been checking it post labor they would have caught. Super scary but I think it's just about being aware of your body and noticing if there's anything weird going on. My husband wants to get a blood pressure cuff for after I deliver LO so we can monitor it at just in case. We'll see if that really happens!!
I would definitely get one, but take it to your doctor's appt first to make sure you're using it right. My dad's a surgeon so he has one and taught my husband and me how to use it. I have found having my own far more accurate than relying on the ones in CVS, Walgreens, etc. Those will give me vastly different readings right in sequence (e.g., 115/75, then 140/95), and just freak me out.

  • I try not to think of the horror stories and the what ifs. I am a worrier and a very anxious person so the less I know about what could go wrong, I think the better off I will be! lol. Anyone else feel the same?
  • @runnershan‌ If you do invest in a blood pressure cuff. I would get an Omron and spend a fair amount of money on it. Also if you are not familiar with them I would have one of the nurses show you how to use it properly. You can get a lot of false readings. But also know not all strokes present with a high blood pressure. Good luck!
  • In no way was I blaming her neglect of a diabetic diet. I was just stating her risk factors for her pregnancy. I am getting compression stockings this week even though I am pretty active because of swelling and will wear them post. I took aspirin in beginning of pregnancy and will probly start again afterwards on 81 mg.

  • Oh my bad she had GD and I sat there at a get together and watched her drink on her Mountain Dew and light up one cig after another. How do you not judge someone a little. My husband was pissed off. I just shrugged my shoulders and said it's not my baby.

  • I am prediabetic. It took me a stinking year to get off of the bad for me foods. I became diabetic after my son was born. All the diets and exercise didn't work. I was tired all the time and falling asleep. The cravings were hard to control. I had bladder problems bad acne and other stuff because of it. I ended up 175 at my due date and was almost 200 a month later. I lost 50 lbs and still struggle. I can't believe I don't have GD. I know what you mean about drinking whatever. I have paid for it though. I could only keep down pop and macaroni and cheese. I gained 30 by 6 months. I haven't gained hardly any since then. With that being said I've been craving yellow cake with chocolate icing since Sunday. Guess what I'm about to eat??? :).
