anxiety

I've always had anxiety, but now that I'm pregnant I'd really like to learn what others did with anxiety while pregnant. What helped you cope with it ? Any meds? Relaxation tips? Thanks!

Re: anxiety

  • When it comes to mental health you are not only going to want to work with your OB but also a psychiatrist for medication and a therapist for therapy. Your OB can give you a good recommendation and can monitor you and the baby if medication is needed.  A psychiatrist is however going to know if medication is needed based on the symptoms and the discussion you can.  I love my OB and think he is great, but I trust him more with mine and my baby's health not so much my mental health.  That is what a phychiatrist is trained for. Speak with your OB about this and ask for a referral.

  • Yoga and exercise helped me during my first pregnancy. So did really concentrating on eating well and preparing healthy food. I couldn't control what might happen, but I could do my best to try to have a healthy pregnancy.

  • Try to stay positive. I have anxiety and I'm 5 weeks pregnant. With my physiatrists help I'm weening off my medication. Its hard though. Ever since I found out my anxiety has gotten worse. I just try to take it day by day!
  • I have Bipolar Type 2 so this was a huge issue for my husband and I when we started trying to get pregnant. It's important you work closely with both your OB and your psychiatrist. I'd also suggest setting up regular appointments with a counselor, therapist, or psychologist. They can monitor your mood with you and give you great tools and technique to maintain a balanced mood.  Things like breathing exercises, yoga/stretching, journaling, taking time to relax (bath, massage, etc.), and especially getting good sleep will all help manage your anxiety.

The medication I was on was still so new that proper research on it's effects on a fetus during pregnancy haven't really been studied so my psychiatrist had me see a genetic counselor to go over the risks of going off or staying on medication while pregnant. She told me it would be best to be off it (which I am, have been and doing great!) BUT that if my anxiety or depression got so severe it might be more beneficial for myself and the child to look at going back on either that medication or one that might be considered slightly safer.

The main thing is to be open with your doctors. The more they know the more they can help you. We're all different with our pregnancies and mental health so it's important to come up with a plan that's right for you.

  • Thank you all so much
  • I take buspirone for anxiety. Just to keep the pregnancy safer from me stressing my doc slightly upped my dose. It's safe for pregnancy and has made my life much better. Ptsd anxiety so I'd get really worked up sometimes.
