Peanuts

How did you introduce nuts into LO's diet? DS is now over a year and can obviously have nuts, but because it is a common allergy I am being paranoid over it. Neither DH or myself have any allergies. So do you just give your kid some peanut butter and sit back and watch to make sure there is no reaction?

Re: Peanuts

  • We haven't given LO any nuts, but given the amount of PB I eat and the fact that she still BFs, I would think any allergy/reaction would have already popped up.  At least that's what I tell myself...

  • Thanks! I know I'm probably over thinking this and DH just makes it worse. His suggestion was to sit in the pediatricians parking lot the first time we give DS peanut butter. Even I thought that was a bit extreme! Ha!

  • We just did a thin layer of pb on toast when he was younger. Good luck!

Yup. Just give them some and sit back. Maybe have Benadryl handy if you are really nervous.

I will say it took over two dozen tries and a few months of PB until we got a reaction (some hives). No one in our families have food allergies but DS1 ended up with peanut (mild reaction) and sesame.

So just be observant...well, forever. (As pretty much all moms are anyway!)

  • We let her have PB on toast. I agree with the pp who said to have some Benadryl on hand just in case if you're concerned.

  • Both of my kids were introduced to peanut better before a year.

I'm not sure that DD1 has had actual nuts yet, but that's mostly because they're not really something I have in the house.

  • We gave DS peanut butter well before he turned one. I was more worried about it being too sticky for him so I mixed it with banana and put it on toast. He loves it.
