Hiccups?

I'm 29 weeks and I just started feeling Baby Boy's hiccups last Friday.  Since then, I'm feeling them at least three times a day, sometimes lasting for 20 minutes.  Of course, a Google search has turned up some horror stories on how this could be linked with cord issues.  But, I've read just as many message boards with women saying it's totally normal. I called my nurse advice line today and she shrugged it off, saying it was normal too.  She said I could count them as kicks, but I'm pretty sure that's wrong, according to most of what I've read about kick counts.  Aside from hiccups, his movement and kick counts seem normal.  Anyone have insight/experience with this?  Are you feeling baby's hiccups, and if so, how often?  Thought I'd weigh in before I became "that patient" and demanded an ultrasound or test unnecessarily.  It's just freaking me out that he went from none at all to having them so frequently.  Thanks!

Re: Hiccups?

  • I have been trying to decipher between kicks and hiccuping myself...like how do you KNOW that your baby is hiccuping?

Today when I was in a meeting, I had some consistent jerking/kicking moments and I was wondering if that was hiccups, but really I haven't had any moment that I was able to definitely know was the hiccups. And she's quite active!

  • is this your first baby? it took me a while to figure out what was hiccups and what was plain jerking around in there. since then i estimate she gets the hiccups 1-3 times a day.

  • I was nervous too as my baby got the hiccups all the time (and still does for that matter). I asked the Dr at my 30 week appt and was told the cord issue relation is crap and that hiccups are a great indicator that baby's nervous system is working and preparing for outside life. Take a deep breath--everything's going to be ok.

  • I started feeling baby's hiccups exactly one week ago. Since then, I've noticed them a lot more often. It feels like little rhythmic jerking movements (every 2-3 seconds) over a 10 minute period of time. It sometimes happens multiple times a day. From what I have read, most women don't feel them before week 27 because the baby is too small. It's totally normal and a good sign that baby is developing well.

  • Step away from the Google.

This. All of this. There was a time when I was between 24 and 26 weeks where the hiccups were constant if I laid on my right side. They were rhythmic and made my jump sometimes because of the intensity. It turns out there was no worry for concern.
  • As if on cue, baby just started his/her nightly round of hiccups.

  • DD had hiccups ALL. THE. TIME. Seriously. It was super annoying but she was fine. Hang in there!

  • Yep, I was just saying this, baby has hiccups all the time!
  • My friend who has a perfectly healthy one month old was always talking about feeling hiccups. Now he has them pretty often, too.. and its the absolute cutest baby noise in the universe.

I did stumble upon that study and noticed that a lot of websites pointed to it, and only it, as the link between the two.  The small part of my brain not riddled with hormones and jitters tends to agree with your logic.  :)

It's good to hear that I'm not the only one feeling hiccups multiple times per day.  I just plan to continue to monitor and do my kick counts and let that be a guide for calling my doc again.
