Preschool backpack recs

I am thinking about getting DS a backpack instead of his diaper bag. He's only 21 months, but we will reuse the diaper bag for baby #2 in January, and I think DS will like having a backpack.

I like this one from PBK, but it's $35, plus $9 for personalization, and I wanted to try to stay closer to $25. Plus they only allow for 9 characters for personalization, and I'd like 10. FWP.

I would get the "small" size for that one, so I want something kind of small but big enough for a change of clothes, diapers and wipes, two sippy cups, snacks, and a few toys and books.

The Skiphop ones like this are too small and kind of tacky IMO: https://www.skiphop.com/product/zoopacks.html

Other ideas? I may look at Lands End or something like that. TIA.

  • Everyone in my newsfeed seems to love the kids L.L. Bean backpacks.
  • Loading the player...
  • Just make sure whatever you pick gets blessed.

I haven't been around as much, and I'm not getting this reference.
  • We used the kids LL Bean bag for DD1 for pre-k and it was great. It grew with her until she started K and LL Bean does a lifetime guarantee on everything they sell so if you were to have problems it would be easy to exchange/return.

Also, I agree that I wouldn't do a full first name for personalization. Hell, I even had a hard time agreeing to let DD1 get her monogram this year...

  • Follow-up question - I do want to have some kind of identifying label on the outside of the backpack because otherwise they put a name tag sticker on the outside of the backpack every day, and I don't want to be wasteful. What's appropriate? Initials? I get that I wouldn't want a stranger going up to DS and calling him by name, so maybe that's why the first name idea is bad.

    This is for all-day daycare.

I don't mean to offend anyone about the SkipHop one - it's just NMS.

Otherwise, I don't think it needs to be anything fancy. It's preschool. Buy whatever you think is cute.

I wouldn't do a full first name either. I don't know if this is for the same reason, but I would worry about security. Creepy stranger sees child's name and uses it to act like he's a family friend... nope.

  • We got a Disney cars toddler backpack. Not sure if it will be big enough (he starts next week), but it is just holding food and a change of clothes so I'm not too worried. Not sure whether to put his name on it. I will be asking at orientation, but if they want it, I will be doing monogram or surname only. I, like pp's will get him a LL bean when he is older, but it would be too big for now.

DD has a Stephen Joseph backpack with first her name on it. I drop her off and pick her up at daycare so I'm not worried about people knowing her name. I like the Stephen Joseph one because there's plenty of room for her folders, but it's not so big she can't carry it.
  • I'm a big fan of the L.L. Bean backpacks. They last forever and will take quite a beating.
