Halp! Nothing fits my skinny toddler

DS1 is almost 26 pounds and tall (I forget exactly how tall). He's starting to outgrow the rise of Sunbabys all the way unsnapped. Everything else fits unsnapped but his waist is so small that we get serious wing droop on almost everything. Flips look good until he starts running around and then they droop off. I like our motherease fitteds now that I don't have to fold over and I can use the snap in doubler, but they're so generously cut that I have a hard time getting coverage even with blueberry coveralls, and then we get terrible wing droop once he starts running around. I'm pulling the sides straight across when I put the covers on. I can get good coverage over the motherease with the airflow cover, but that thing is super bulky and I only have two. I've been thinking of getting more pull on covers since they sit lower on the thigh and should easily cover the fitted. He can pee through a flat in an hour, or barely wet one in three hours, so I guess I could double flat and snappi it under a cover, but padfolded under a flip is currently a disaster.

Or I could buy more diapers. But what should I buy? Our simplex fit well, but those are expensive. We have two sunbaby trainers that I like fit wise, but I dislike stuffing them. What's good on a tall skinny 2 year old who isn't likely to potty learn for at least another year (because mama's too lazy to do much training, we've tried a little and he's not anywhere near ready)?

  • I have not tried grovia. I have a friend who really didn't like them, but her daughter is much thicker than my son. How do they fit over flats? I just tried a double flat snappied, but couldn't really get a flip over it, aren't grovia even trimmer in the crotch?

  • That makes sense, but I've only got flips and coveralls. I guess that's why the sunbaby fit so nicely, but he gets plumbers crack since the rise is getting short on those. Looks like it's time to get organized so I can swap this week.

  • I like MK's idea about GroVia covers. They're just one row of snaps and, although my kid is a real chunk, I imagine they would have a nice fit on a skinny kid.
  • DS is skinny for a toddler and right now the diaper that seem to fit best are Thirsties OS pockets, Grovia AIOS and Totsbots Easyfit v4. Some of these are Aplix, which we stayed away from for a while since DS liked to take them off. That's less of an issue now that he is older and for the most part keeps his pants on. Fingers crossed.
  • DS was 50th percentile for height and 40th percentile for weight; he's definitely a more slender looking kid with very little chunk on him. My favorite covers are the Thirsties Duo Wraps and GroVia shells. For the former, he's in size two, but on the smallest waist and rise settings for daytime. At night, when we fold two flats together in the diaper bag fold and add a velour doubler, I have him on the medium rise setting, but it all fits great.

The GroVia shells are very trim, and the waist band snaps overlap. It's a little too snug for DS on that setting, but doable. I have these on the medium rise setting as well, but my mom puts them on the smallest when she diapers DS, and I guess they work fine. The legs are cut high so you have to make sure the diaper isn't peeking out, so I don't use them at night.

I have been using the Thirsties and the GroVia for more than two years now and they have all held up exceptionally well. They are great, great covers, and I think the fit is good for skinny babies (at least in my experience).

I would also say to try Grovia. They did not work for my son because he's thicker too. They are very narrow with a good rise, sounds like they'd be perfect for you. :)
  • Huh? I'm surprised at all the Grovia recommendations.  DS has pretty much outgrown the rise on his Best Bottoms, and is getting close on his Grovia shells.  He does have a thicker waist though, so maybe thats making a difference?

Anyways, I definitely like the Thristies suggestion.  I do love my Grovia shells, super high quality TPU and snaps.  Also what about a Sweet Pea cover?  I swear their OS will almost get small enough at the waist to fit a NB, and the rise is just about as tall as a Blueberry Coverall.  There are four snaps on each side, so you could do the MK technique of snapping with it too, but even snapping the "correct" way I've never had wing droop.

  • I'm intrigued by the thirsties suggestion. I have some fab fitteds in size one for the newb and I like them. How is the all in one? Does size 2 have a decent rise? Or should I just try a cover and stick with the flats?
