Team Green difficult labor story (ANDATCDC)

Hopefully I don't get too long winded but it was definitely a labor a delivery I had not planned!

On Wednesday September 3rd I started noticing contractions at about 2 pm. They were roughly 10 minutes apart. I continued to work until 6pm. I had called my midwife because I wasn't sure if my water was leaking or not. She wanted me to go to the hospital to find out for sure or not. Went home, took a shower, got a bite to eat and headed to the hospital. We arrived in triage at 7pm. Was put on the monitor and checked. Water hadn't broken and was 2-3 cm dilated. They wanted me to walk for about an hour to see if I was progressing enough to admit me or not. After an hour of walking I was 3-4 cm and contractions anywhere from 5-7 minutes apart. After discussing things with my husband and doula we decided to stay at the hospital and labor vs going home to labor there for awhile.

By about 2 am I was cm and having a hard time dealing with the pain. I went into the birthing tub (which was AMAZING!) and labored there for awhile. I was stuck at 7 cm for about 3 hours. At this point I wasn't handling the pain well at all and my 2 options were to start pitocin or break my water. Both of these options I knew would only make the pain worse. I opted for an epidural at this time (completely not in my original birth plan). The in house anesthesiologist was in the OR and a back up had to be called in. So an hour or more later I was being prepped for the epidural. He poked me about 6-8 times and kept hitting the same damn never. I was SO DONE with everything at this point. Finally about 15-20 minutes of trying we got a successful epidural at about 730am

Now we no pain and being completely exhausted from being up for 24 hours I was about to get some sleep. By about 12 pm I was ready to start pushing. I pushed ... and pushed ... and pushed some more. We tried a few different positions but baby wasn't progressing very well. At about 1:30 my midwife called in her back up OB to talk c-section. He arrived about 2 pm. I had been pushing for 2 hours and was DONE (again) with this whole labor and delivery thing. He took a look at me and said we weren't doing a c-section we were delivering vaginally. My epidural had basically worn off and I was hurting again! They brought the mirror out for me so I could watch the progression I was making with each push to help me through. He talked me through the next few contractions and at 2:29pm team green turned team BLUE!!!! Calvin Bernard Dwight was born into this world!!! Weighing in at 9 lbs 12 oz and 22.5 inches long.

And now the fun really began. I got to hold him immediately and do some skin to skin. Due to a short umbilical cord I couldn't life him very high, but we did the best we could. I could tell the atmosphere in the room changed. I could feel lots of warm fluid coming out of me. They couldn't stop or control my bleeding. Things get real blurry at this point. I know they took Calvin from me so they could care of me better. I had nurses all over me poking me, prodding me, pushing on me. The bleeding wouldn't stop. The meds they gave me made me sick. I vomited about 8 times and got the shakes. Blood pressure dropped to 70/40. Blood was ordered for a transfusion. The back up OB (who had left once I delivered) was called back, but was already 30 minutes away. The oncall hospital doc was called in and about 10 nurses were all trying to get my bleeding under control. I was nearly taken to the OR for a DnC. Finally after about an hour the bleed was controlled and pretty much stopped. I later lerned I lost over 3000 cc's of blood (which is nearly half of my volume). I received 2 units of blood which helped me feel MUCH better.

It was a LONG difficult process, but was happy to have my baby boy in my arms again. Because of the failed epidural attempts my thigh remained totally numb until Friday morning about 10 am. I also passed out Thursday night when trying to go to the bathroom for the first time after delivery. With all my blood loss and not eating for about 26 hours I guess it was to be expected.

Recovering has been alright. Just very tired from low blood counts right now. I have little to know milk supply so breast feeding as been more than challenging but we are doing everything we can to get on the right track. At the end of the day, all that matters is that Calvin and I are both healthy. We have been home since Saturday night and DH and I are trying to figure out this whole parenting thing!!
