Re: Weekly GD Check-In 09/09/14

  • I ate the same thing for breakfast the past five days, and nearly every day up until now my postprandial reading has been about 115. Today it was over 200! I was not happy about that, especially since I was at the OB's office and spilled sugar into my urine sample. Stupid diabetes.

We scheduled my induction date this morning (pending confirmation from the hospital) for October 1, so I should have a baby in a little over three weeks!

Good QOTW! I'm going to continue practicing some of the non-physical aspects of yoga that I picked up in preparation for childbirth.

  • My numbers have been pretty good but I haven't been very hungry lately.  So, I am just trying to make sure that I eat enough carbs to keep my numbers at a decent level.

We will probably set an induction date at this week's appointment.  At last week's appointment, the last of the rotational OBs commented that they would want Schroeder to arrive between 39 and 40 weeks, so hopefully we can work with my OB to set that as close to 40 weeks as possible (as long as Schroeder continues to do well on her scans).

MFM appointment today, so I get to see her dance around the screen again - especially since I set the appointment for just after lunch.

QOTW:  like MRSclarke08, I hope to keep some of the GD diet in place to help with weight control and sugar control.  DH has commented about it as well as it has helped him loose some weight, but also has commented that he can't wait until I can eat "regularly".

  • Diet is going well - I've learned that I cannot add multi-grain Cheerios AND a touch of honey to my Greek yogurt. Got a big number. But whole wheat pasta with chicken last night was totally fine.
No new recipes but I do like my ricotta dessert if I hadn't already posted: ricotta, vanilla extract, peanut butter. You stir it up and leave in fridge for a bit. Really nice treat. I put a dollop (or two) of cool whip. Stole that from the south beach diet days!

Great question - I've already told myself that to see how my body reacts to carbs shows me I need to add more protein and greens when I have them. I also started a basic barre class that I hope to continue when cleared.
  • Diet is going ok. Since we added an additional dose of glyburide before bedtime all my numbers have been much better.  Hoping that my body doesn't adjust to it too quickly and that it continues to help my numbers.

I will keep reading food labels and really work on watching my intake just not as strict as I have been since June 27.  I do have a hankering for some gooey brownies but since I haven't been eating stuff like that I do think that my body will not feel good if I eat a bunch of crap.   SO I will strive to keep an good balance (plus I want to breast feed and provide good nutrients to the baby so that gives me continued motivation).

Still so happy about being released from MFM.  Still no talk about when we will schedule the induction (ideally between 39 and 40, so less than three weeks out, hooray!)

  • So, I have been very bad. Between the baby shower and my birthday there has been an influx of food intake, including cakes. My numbers have been within range but higher than normal, and I'm a little nervous to go to the doctor this week and have them check my weight along with my numbers. Also, even with adding additional protein I feel like I am always hungry, I just can't get enough food!

I would like to say, along with PP, that after I would like to continue to follow the GD diet a bit. At the same time, it will feel nice to not feel guilty every time I have something sweet!
  • Diet is going well. I have realized that I don't do well with sugary beverages but that my body is actually tolerating carbs reasonably well so that helps. I used to keep track of my food in a food log but I've been lazy about that in the past week.

New habits - I remember resolving to stick to the GD diet after my last pregnancy but that didn't happen. :) I might try it again this time around. One habit I have picked up is ordering breakfast tacos from this place next to work at least once a week. I might keep that going post pregnancy - not necessarily a good habit though.

  • I didn't take my endo up on her offer to allow me to regulate a normal diet with insulin, but I'm keeping it in the back of my mind.  Over the last month I've only had one post-prandial that was high, 121, and my endo & MFM were actually happy to see it.

I've had oddly low numbers the last 2 days which made me ponder my placenta function for a bit. BPPs are interesting, but the little guy is always in the same position everytime (head down and facing backward, though he will occasionally turn his head to face the camera, but only for a few moments) - the scans take about 5 minutes, which is good, but frustrating because I wait so long every damn time.

My shower was Sunday and I confess to plotting out the pk/pd of humulin n vs. my BG curves and what I wanted to eat in an attempt to find a dose that would allow me to cheat without hurting my numbers.  I ended up having about 3 slices of brioche french toast covered in maple syrup and a few other foods, and was around 100 2 hours later.  Numbers stayed in the 80 range for the rest of the day, so at least I didn't over shoot my mark with self dosing.  I've learned I can eat things like bagels with protein, or pumpkin spice lattes for lunch and still come in around 100 (and stay within range all day), which was a bit of a surprise.  Sometimes if the numbers are lower than I expected I worry about my placenta function - at least the 100 numbers sort of confirm that it's doing its job.

QOTW: Will I keep anything from this?  Probably forcing myself to eat more protein because that has always been an issue for me, in addition to actually eating breakfast.  Otherwise the diet isn't really good for me because of the weight loss aspect, so I look forward to incinerating my placenta.

  • @golfingdarwinfish: I have a love/hate relationship with my placenta. I can't wait until we break up!
  • Well, this is my first time checking in after taking the 3hr GTT twice. First test was around 30 weeks and the 2hr was slightly elevated. I wasn't diagnosed then, but because of that and a family history of diabetes, my OB wanted me to re-test. The second time around, the last 2 draws were considerably elevated, so here I am with you lovely ladies!

I have no idea what I'm doing/how to regulate the blood sugars yet. It's kind of overwhelming to shift gears like this with only 4wks left, but will try to make the best of it. I'm off to go read ALL the previous GD check-ins!

I don't really follow a different diet per se, and won't really stop eating how I am now post-pregnancy. So, special snowflake over here I guess. (Except I might have more diet soda than I do now and be able to indulge in sushi rice without feeling depressed about the high BGs I have after.)

Shit got real today when I pinged my pre-pregnancy endo for an insulin refill because I'm down to three vials, and can't re-order for another month and a half. I'm currently blowing through vials after about two and a half weeks and it's just going to get worse. So he did some calculations and figured I'd eventually need 100 units a day, so nine vials of insulin for a 3 month supply. My insurance doesn't really check amounts so long as the doctor approves it, but damn. Nine????
I have no point of reference in regards to the number if vials but that sounds mind blowing.  Glad you insurance won't hassle you about it.
  • @starla487 I'm just curious: how much do you go through when not pregnant?

A vial is 500 units and I normally go through one in about 30 days. (Sometimes a little longer.) Now I'm blowing through them in about 18. And it's only gonna get worse. :-D
    Curiosity satisfied!

  • For those of you who had your shower after GD diagnosis - did you enjoy cake and sweets? Pair them with anything (protein-wise) to keep numbers down? I am still diet-controlled so curious.
  • I had a tiny bite of cake but otherwise I stuck to veggies and protein. My main cheat that day was the fruit!

But I have had a very hard time controlling my levels so have had to stick to a much stricter diet than was prescribed.

I am diet and med controlled.

My endo told me she didn't want to see numbers from me that day because she wanted me to enjoy the shower without paranoia. But, my medical team has issues with me following the diet because I'm losing weight, which I should not do, and in addition I've only had one "high" reading over a month (121 - which my endo was actually happy to see) so they have not yet been concerned about the baby actually getting too many calories.

My numbers have been higher than I'd like so I'm not going to go too crazy but I kind of love your endo. One day worry free would be nice.
  • Any suggestions for treating a cold?  My go to this pregnancy has been tea with honey, but honey is obviously not an ideal treatment right now.

She's at Columbia Univ and I highly recommend her if you live in the city.  Still an academic also so active in the research community.

ETA: by the city I mean NYC - it's true, NYers really do forget there are other cities...
