NBR (Obviously) Buying cell phone from Target?

Has anyone done this? I currently have Sprint and am eligible for an upgrade. I want to keep my same plan and keep my insurance coverage through Sprint. They're offering the Samsung Galaxy S5 for $99 with a $20 Target gift card. Going directly through Sprint, the phone is $199.99 even with my upgrade credit. How does all of this work? Does Target have some kind of "agreement" with them that I will have to sign as well? I'm going to look at phones at lunchtime and thought it would be a good idea to know what the heck is going on before I go to Target. Anyone have experience with this?

Re: NBR (Obviously) Buying cell phone from Target?

  • I know I can use my same Sprint plan, I'm just wondering if I will have to go through Target again for anything if I have problems with the phone. Target offers their own insurance if you want to pay for it, but I'll be keeping my insurance through Sprint. It seems too easy, like I must be missing something?

  • As far as I know phones bought from retailers such as target/Wal-Mart are like straight talk (or other pre pay providers) with straight talk, they operate from Sprint or Verizon towers but it can't be used with a Sprint contract...it can only be used with a straight talk plan. I have straight talk and pay $45/mo (+tax) for unlimited data talk and txt. There is no insurance plan (I have a warranty) so if my phone tears up I go buy a new one. (I only spent like $29+tax for an LG smart phone) I miss my iPhone but who cares...I'm not paying ridiculous amounts for a phone.
How many minutes for phone calls do you get per month?  What towers/service does the straight talk plan use?

  • DH and I got our phones from Costco but we have Verizon. When he had a prob with his phone we took it to a Verizon store and they took care of it.

  • i got my last iPhone through Best Buy (verizon plan) and whenever i had problems i took it to verizon and they settled it. I think these companies are just authorized resellers. But i will say, i got the best buy insurance instead of the verizon insurance and it was the worst mistake i made. i will always buy insurance straight from the phone carrier now. Best  Buys insurance was like geek squad and only really would do anything if you dropped your phone and broke it. there was no water damage coverage, no theft or lost coverage. grr

but yeah i think they just have a deal with the cell companies and thats how the phones are so cheap.

  • We got my iPhone 5c through target during one of their promotions. You can keep your plan and they renew your contact for you through your carrier. The phone will be covered the first two weeks by target, but after that, you have to go through your carrier. It was a decent process - no more difficult than going through the carrier's store.

  • Thanks girls! I called to make sure they had the phone in stock and was told I'd need the last 4 of the ss # for the account holder which is DH so I'll have to wait to do it since I didn't know the #'s and couldn't get ahold of him. Note to self: Memorize DH's ss #!!!
