Is anyone else on here exclusively pumping right now?

I'm sure there's another board for this but I would rather talk to people here.  :)   Just wondering if there is anyone else to commiserate with!

  • I'm pumping at my desk right now as we speak.  I'm only able to get 5 pumps in a day b/c DD sleeps through the night and I refuse to get up and pump.  I have a decent amount frozen only b/c of her NICU stay.  I just get so tired of it.  Part of me what's to quit and then the other part calls me a quitter so I keep going.

Just do what you can/want/feel comfortable with, which is so much easier said than done.  I had so much guilt around quitting.  I still feel guilty, a year later.  I hate how much pressure we put on ourselves.

I hate the feeling of pumping.  I grew to hate the sound of the pump, the feeling of dripping milk....the milk droplets on my shirt or pants when I was pumping and sometimes leaking.  I just hated it.  For me it got to the point that I felt really anxious and frustrated any time I had to pump, and I knew that it was time for me to give it up.

I'm hoping I'll know when I've really reached by limit.  She had formula for 2 days in the NICU b/c we wanted to try thickened feeds and she didn't poop for 5 days.  They had to give her a suppository.  I'm sure she'd probably be fine on it now, but it makes me nervous.  I feel like there is just milk EVERYWHERE!!  Everywhere I look I swear I can find at least one drop of milk somewhere.  I just get tired of having to excuse myself from stuff for 30-40 mins just to pump.

I have an all day meeting downtown on Monday and I'm so anxious b/c I have no idea how I'm going to pump!

@ChickenonSunday I have this delusion that I can stop soon and just use my freezer stash.  I'm sure in reality it would get us through a month, maybe.

  • @bay511 "excessively pumping" would have been an appropriate title.  :)

@ChickenonSunday That's the part that annoys me the most is dragging the damn thing around.  Sometimes I pump on the chair in the family room, sometimes I pump upstairs in our room on the bed, or the floor or the chair.  Sometimes I pump in the car or at my desk.  We do have a mini fridge in our office and I keep my milk and pump parts in a little cooler in there, so that's nice.  I'm also tired of my wadrobe being limited to what I can easily pump in!

  • I EP'd for 7 months. I pumped 4x per day and hated most of it. I pumped twice at work. What really wore on me was bringing the pump to work. Our parking lot is at the bottom of a huge hill and lugging it up that hill everyday just wore on me. When my BIL passed I was so busy helping my H plan the funeral and clear out the apartment I only got to pump in the morning and at night which triggered my period. Then my supply started to go down so I was about 6oz short per day. We went through the freezer stash quickly and started supplementing with formula. DD2 hated it so it took awhile to ween and once she started being ok with it I quit. It's just such a mind fuck. If you drop 1oz (which is totally normal) you instantly start to panic about supply. Then the panicking eventually fucks with your supply.
Yes!!  I was able to nurse DS2 but started pumping when I went back to work.  I had no freezer stash with him.  I was so panicky all the time about not having enough for him.  It was horrible.  I'm less panicky this time b/c I know I have the freezer stash.  It really is a mind fuck though.  Even though I have the freezer stash, it drives me crazy to even think about touching it.  Like, what the hell am I saving it for?  She has to drink it eventually!

  • @HotDiggityDog I rented a symphony right after she was born. I only kept it for 2 weeks before my Medela got to me.  The NICU had a Symphony I could use in her room though, so I got to use it for two months for most of my pumps.  It was so much more comfortable than the one I have.

It's hard b/c I really want to keep doing it because I can and because I know it's good for her.  6 months was my first goal and we're almost there.  I'd love to get her to a year on BM but we'll see. DH and I are going to the Dominican at the end of February so I'll probably stop around then and hopefully will still have enough frozen to get her through.

DS1 was completely formula fed and I did supplement with DS2 around 8 months.  So, I know she'd be fine on it.  The pumping was the only thing I felt like I could do for her when she was in the hospital so I think that's part of the reason why I don't want to let it go!

I don't ep.. But right now I'm pumping from a restaurant back room while on a business trip. Just felt like I needed to day hi in this thread.
@bearsbearsbears  It was you I was thinking about earlier!  I couldn't remember who said they were going on a trip for work and were worried about pumping.  How has it been going?  I just looked up the convention center I'll be at all day Monday and they have a "nursing mothers" room so I'm hopeful I can use that

  • I don't EP this time but I did with DS1 for about 6 months. I have supply issues though, so both kids have been supplemented with formula. I absolutely hate pumping. I hate everything about it. I am not sure why I keep going but I do. I figure I have made it almost 9 months, so I might as well go to a year.
  • I EP'd for 9 months with my DD1 and am currently on week 10 with DD2. I splurged and bought a second PISA used on eBay (clutch yo pearls ladies) and it's so much easier to have 2 PISA's and a Harmony so I'm not really unplugging and getting set up as often.

I pumped 4x daily with DD1 but for some reason with this baby it's gotta be 5 times or my supply tanks and I get all cloggy.

Sorry my response was delayed here, I'm fighting the plague and had work travel all last week. My apologies to anyone to caught my germs in Montreal last week.

  •  I have a plugged duct right now and am having a hard time getting rid of it through pumping. Tried all the tricks and will just keep trying until it's gone.
Did you try putting your vibrator on it? I actually did this today with mine, took a hot bath, then vibrator again before pumping and sucked that fucker right out.

  • Meeeee! I'm mostly quit though, down to just one pump a day. I renewed my rental pump for another month because I'm too f'ing lazy to use my hand pump. :-P

  • Oh I forgot the worst part. I froze about 700 oz during the first three months when my supply was crazy high. I went to start using it so it wouldn't go bad and it turns out in had high lipase, some enzyme that makes the milk smell and taste funny. It's perfectly safe but some kids won't drink it. That "some kids" was mine. So I threw out about 700 oz of milk and then had to bring all my milk to a boil before freezing it from that point on. I never really got that stash back. Fuck the things we do for our kids. 700 GD OUNCES. I'm going to go cry now.
@PineappleLeviosa  I want to cry for you!!!! 700 ounces is insane!   I think I have some lipase but it seems to come and go.  I'm not even sure if that makes any sense.  She always drinks it so we have gotten lucky there.  I just thawed some frozen milk from April and it smelled ok.

I can't imagine having to scorch on top of all the pumping and bottle washing.  You are a rock star.

@ghostof5letters 5 pumps seems to be my magic number too.  I can usually get about exactly what she eats (maybe a little less) with that.  If I only get 4 pumps in, it starts to drop.  For some reason I don't seem to get clogs (knock on wood) so that's good.  I had one while BF DS2 but that's been it so far.

You just take it for granted that everyone has a vibrator.

    Everyone should have one.

If you don't, use your electric toothbrush or one of your baby's vibrating attachments like for the PnP or RnP

  • I am a lurker from D13 and have EP twice now. First time around I pumped for 6 1/2 months and had a freezer stash until 10 months. This time around K2 is 8 months and by the end of this week I will have enough to last a year (4000 oz freezer). I don't mind the pump now that I have a stash because I use that as my me time. I bump, get on Facebook, read my Kindle. Pumping is a pain but I got used to it so now it doesn't bother me. I am now working on cutting down and weaning myself off the pump. Good luck and remember no matter what you are feeding your baby.
  • Not an EPer but I just finished pumping for a year for DS2 and I travel frequently for work so I thought I'd leave some tips here:
    - pumping while driving is better than pumping in an unknown location. You need the hands free bras, an adaptor, and a cover or scarf unless you want to give truckers a show :-)
    - in the US almost every large office building has a monther's room now. Ask the conference/meeting organizers for access. They should try HR first for access privileges.
    - pumping in airports sucks. Unless you're in CA and the have mothers' rooms in some airports. I try to use a family restroom, a stall at the end (I hang my pump on the purse hook), or corner of the sink with a cover. I've also pumped in the back of nearly empty flights and in airplane WCs. Let the flight attendant know what's happening and they will generally be extremely helpful however they can.
    - the keyword to use to get a REAL refrigerator and not just a glorified cooler in a hotel room is "medical liquids"
    - if you're at a convention center or hotel meeting, the hotel will usually give you access to an empty room to pump even if you're not staying there.
    - BRU and BBB have nursing/pumping rooms in store that are separate from the restroom.
    - When in all day meeting I let one of the meeting organizers know that I will be late returning from breaks, or asked that the agend be modified around my break needs/meeting participation requirements.

In general, the best tip to anyone pumping and traveling I've learned is to be 100% upfront in saying you are a nursing mom and need a place to pump. Be confident when you ask and be willing to help the person find a solution for you by suggesting they first contact their HR department and/or facilities if they are totally clueless about your request.

    Good luck!

No vibrator in my house but now I know what to add to my registry list.
Perfect addition to any baby registry.
