Lovey recommendations

My 13 month DD is a horrible sleeper so I am trying to introduce a lovey that she can hold at night to comfort herself with when she wakes up in the night. I know every child is different and has its own preference but is there a lovey toy or blanket that has worked well for your child to get him/her to soothe themselves back to sleep?
I tried one of those small blankets with a stuffed animal attached to it, I wore it for awhile and put it in between us when I nursed so it had my scent and she could associate it with bedtime but the stuffed animal has a rattle in it and she shakes it around and plays with it, getting riled up. She really loves her glowworm; she gets very excited when she sees it and gets upset when the music stops playing or it is taken away from her so I tried using this as a lovey for her to sleep with but it seems to just stimulate her. She enjoys playing with it and I don't think the bright glow of the light she puts up to her face helps put her to sleep either. I guess I am looking for a plain "calm" stuffed animal or blanket for her to comfort her. I've heard of the Original Slumber Bear but it seems a little big. Any suggestions?

Re: Lovey recommendations

  • My daughter had a blanket crocheted by her great grandmother...she never took to it.  One night when she was about 7 months old we had a babysitter and went out.  I was wearing a fancy sleeveless silky blouse.  When I came home and she woke I snuggled her on the floor bed in her room and she started rubbing my blouse.  In order to sneak away I slipped my blouse off and left it with her.  Well...I never got the blouse back as it became her lovey.

A black and white stripey sleeveless silky blouse.  She carried that around for months and months and I finally decided to get my blouse back so I brought it to a fabric store and found the same fabric in a very similar black and white pattern.  She took to it right away...so I went back and bought 2 more strips of the fabric.

So now, at 18months my daughters lovey is a 1meter strip of fabric!  She LOVES it.  We actually came to really love it too as it is a really silky smooth fabric and while it is quite large is scrunches up into a little ball.  She knows there are 3 and she gets estatic when she gets her hands on all of them at the same time.  The fabric store lady said it was a great fabric choice by my daughter as it is never going to fray, can be washed endlessly and won't wear out.

I doubt this is any use to you...aside from saying think outside hte box and watch to see if she is drawn to a certain fabric type/texture.  My daughter likes smooth silky fabrics some kdis will like thicker, fuzzy, wooly etc.

  • My nieces all seem to like Jellycats - I think because they are super soft. My son is a blankie boy all the way. He started with a taggie blanket very early on, and switched to one of the small Aden and Anais with the silky edges on them. He loves those, and they come in two packs, which is really nice.

My son LOVES this fox set.  IKEA has a lot of really great, extremely reasonably priced, soft toys that don't have any hard parts and you can throw them right in the wash.  He actually has two of these so I can have one on deck when it needs to be washed.
  • Both of my boys became attached to super soft blankets.  No special lovey, we just realized that DS1 really liked to rub something soft so we grabbed a few of the thousand blankets we got as gifts and he really liked one of them.  We bought 3 more like it to have backups but he found them and eventually slept with all 4.

DS2 was the same way and now has 2 blankets that are his loveys.  One is a soft fleece blanket and the other has a minky backing to it.  One was a gift when he was born and the other was one we had packed away with all of our stuff from DS1.

Try out some of the blankets you already have before you go out and buy a special lovey.
  • My DS sleeps with an A+A blanket and that seems to help him fall asleep.  I don't know that he is really obsessed with it like a lovey, but he does like it in his crib.  Once he is up from bed or a nap, he chucks the blanket out of the crib to let me know he is done with it.

  • We are tagging lovers over here both kids have them and love them, we have multiples of each so we can wash them

  • if you have a fabric store close to you i would take LO with you and let her find a material she loves to the touch! we did this with our DD recently so we could get lots of variety (one for sitters place, grandparents, and us) The nice thing if its a fleece is you dont have to sew up the edges you can just leave them cut as is. Make sure you run it through the washer of course, but at least you will find the texture they prefer!
  • Saranoni blankets are amazing.  My son has all sizes, but they make a little bitty one that is perfect.  They are only about $20 for the little ones and amazingly soft.  My son won't sleep without it.
