My aunt had twins and wasn't aware until labor. I'm due for twins but they saw just one in the u/s and only heard one heartbeat but my aunt keeps reminding me it wAs the same for her until 2 popped out
I don't think that makes any sense, is there a set order for these things within families? Sounds like an old wives tale or something my great grandma used to say
I am having twins and neither one was hidden. They did only get one heartbeat because the way they are positioned though. We heard the second, but it was very muffled with white noise.
I have a good friend who is an identical twin. Her parents had no idea there were two babies until delivery. However, that was 37 years ago. You know, back in the dark ages before ultrasounds.
My BFF is expecting twins! She had an ultrasound around 6.5 weeks and only saw one baby. Then she went in again at 8.5 weeks due to some bleeding, and - surprise! Two little embryos both with healthy heartbeats! So it is possible for one to be hidden early, but I'd imagine as they grow it would be harder to miss.
Oh, I see. With technology today it's very very unlikely that you'd have twins and not know about it. If your aunt is older (I'm assuming she is) the equipment probably wasn't as nice as it is today.
This is an inaccurate statement. There are women who do not get U/S's until 20 weeks and that is when they find out there are 2 and not one. You can still hear or only look for one HB up until that US confirmation.
I'm having twins and twins do not run in my family nor my hubby's family. We were not doing fertility treatments. So as far as I'm concerned it can happen to anyone. We saw both babies and heard both heartbeats at our 10 week visit, and my belly is huge already. lol
Im lurking in from f15. I have 2 very good friend that are ID twins. They are infact mono-mono twins. The rarest kind. They shared a sac and placenta. My friend was actually hidden behind his brother the whole time because they were packed in there so close. they didn't know until they were born that there were twins. I asked his mother how she didn't know that there were 2. She said that because they were mono-mono and so close, they actually synced their heartbeats together. The doc could only hear one very strong HB the whole time. Since it was 35 years ago the US were a bit grainy and the angles were not as advanced so he was never seen. With todays tech in US it would be very hard to miss. @mandsJS my MIL is a twin and my DH was obsessed with us having twins. I always said to him "just because you're mother has a twin brother doesn't mean my ovary is going to magically release 2 eggs!"

I know of something like that happening 20 years ago but that was before routine ultrasounds. But for sure women can go to the a/s and not know. Or not know until they give birth if they do not get any scans.

I’m a modern man, a man for the millennium. Digital and smoke free. A diversified multi-cultural, post-modern deconstruction that is anatomically and ecologically incorrect. I’ve been up linked and downloaded, I’ve been inputted and outsourced, I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading. I’m a high-tech low-life. A cutting edge, state-of-the-art bi-coastal multi-tasker and I can give you a gigabyte in a nanosecond! I’m new wave, but I’m old school and my inner child is outward bound. I’m a hot-wired, heat seeking, warm-hearted cool customer, voice activated and bio-degradable. I interface with my database, my database is in cyberspace, so I’m interactive, I’m hyperactive and from time to time I’m radioactive.
Like others have stated, I could see it happening early/mid pregnancy as some women don't get u/s until 12 and/or up to 20 weeks. The likelihood of them missing it anytime after that is pretty close to zero with today's technology assuming the women has adequate prenatal care.
Twins run on both sides of my family and both sides of hubby's family, so our u/s tech spent some extra time "looking for the other one" during my 12 week, haha. Just one to be seen here though! I have heard of surprise twins, but not really in recent years with the advanced technology.
Well not a case of hidden twins, but on a very early stage of my pregnancy, during the first ultrasound, we saw two gestational sacs, one with a baby but the other one was empty! For a while, and until my second ultrasound, (at 13 weeks) i thought that maybe, it could have a second baby in there somewhere... But no... It's only one, and the second gestational sac is starting to shrink, and will eventually disappear!
Re: Hidden twins anyone?
I'm pretty sure there is no true "method" to twins. Who told you this?
