nwmr: children furniture advice

Need some sane advice to help me stop over-thinking this: what kind of twin bed to get for DD?

We bought a nice dresser and nightstand for DD's nursery with the intention of keeping it her entire childhood.  We bought a cheap crib and have since transitioned her to a twin mattress on the floor.  She is now 26 months.

I really want to get her mattress off the floor.  I'm thinking an inexpensive (<$150), wooden, low platform bed would be a good choice.  DH could paint it to sort-of match her other furniture.

But when I look at the nicer ones that include a headboard and trundle (both DH and I agreed a trundle would be a good idea) that could be a longer-term investment, then we're looking at a minimum of $500...actually $750 for the two sets I really like.

Obviously DD doesn't need a trundle now - she is too young for sleep overs.  But I LOVE the look of a headboard.  And I don't want a footboard because it makes it that much harder to make the bed...tucking sheets in never appealed to me. :)

Should I buy the least expensive platform bed sans headboard now as a transition piece for the next several years and invest in a nicer bed w/ headboard and trundle later on (if DD asks for it) or just make the investment now and hope that DD doesn't outgrow it style-wise?

What do the logical, experienced working moms say?

  • We purchased a plain white bed with a trundle for $399 from Furniture Row. Nothing fancy but we like the trundle in the event that we have to lay down with her (we pull it out and she lays on the top and then we lay on the trundle).

  • We just put DS into a twin mattress on a frame. He was on the mattress on the floor. I bought a nice metal platform frame, and I'm still shopping for a headboard. I figure that's good enough for now.

  • I would get a really good quality twin bed sans headboard and sans trundle and then splurge on a nice headboard in a few months/years. This way u can swap out or modify the headboard later in life to suit her growing taste and likes. As to the trundle i personally dont like them and would prefer a mattress on the floor or a sofa-turns bed kind of solution over a trundle. I personally feel that its easier for kids to destroy a trundle by jumping on it as the link between the bed /trundle is somewhat weak when compared to the structure of the bed itself

I don't know about your exact specifications but we bought two twin size Sesame Zest beds from the company Night and Day and have been happy with them. They do sell a trundle for them but instead I bought some rolling drawers instead from another manufacturer.

edited to add price: they were <200 and one has held up for 3 years without a scratch so far (despite some major jumping).

  • Thanks everyone! I ended up buying a simple but strong poplar wood frame. DH can paint it to match the other furniture or we might be able to leave it as is. We can add a headboard and trundle later. And it is string enough to fit an adult so I think this will be a versatile piece that we can hold on to indefinitely.

Next step is to hit up grandpa to get hind to help is make dd a headboard :)

Thanks for all your help and advice! Much appreciated!!
