Newborn photo shoots

I've been thinking about taking professional photo session to our baby.

Anyone else doing this? Do you think it worth the money? How long after birth would you do it?

I think they are so cute!

  • If you want the tiny newborn ones, you need to do them before they are 8 days old.

  • This was one thing I was pretty adamant about doing. I'm a sucker for photos since they last a lifetime and wanted some great shots of our LO.

We hired a newborn photographer and we will so them 7 days after she's born. It's recommended before they are 10 days old if you want the curled up photos.

  • Yes. I've heard it's best within 7-10 days as well. The photographer is coming to our house. I was in bad shape during that soon last time and would not have wanted to try to get us all out the door and to another location.

  • We are! I'm so excited for our shoot. Our photographer comes to the house with all of her props, so we don't have to take baby anywhere. We will use them for birth announcements. I was pretty particular about who I wanted to use, so I actually booked her in back in May!

  • My mom is a newborn photographer so she'll be doing ours... but if she wasn't I would totally invest in a professional within the first week/10 days when they are still in that curl up phase. I think this is the age I would most miss if we didn't do them... They are only that tiny for such a short amount of time.

  • I have a friend that's apprenticing (sp?) with a really popular local newborn photographer, and she's going to let us be her guinea pigs. Not having enough photos of my first child was one of my biggest regrets.
  • We did with my daughter and will do with this one. My husband complained about the price, until we saw the images and then repeatedly told me how glad he was that we did them.

  • We are doing them. I am very happy with my decision and every time see post pictures of other babies it makes me so glad that I chose her!
  • @theresat858‌ that is awesome for her to do that!!

I am doing my own this time and then a friend is doing them. I am going to try and do the 30 days of baby H so we will see :)

You guys may get an overload of baby photos!
  • I regret not doing it last time. I have someone I'd like to use, just debating how to convince the hubs that it's worth the minor expense!

  • How much can you expect to pay for something like this?
    imageimage
  • We did newborn shots for our son and already have them scheduled for this baby as well.  The photographer that we use (who is also a friend), comes to our house and takes pictures of the baby, and then pictures of us all together.  I personally prefer to have a variety of both pictures of the baby alone, and pictures of us as a family.

With B, they were absolutely worth the money!  I love those pictures of him from when he is so small.

For this kiddo, we have them tentatively scheduled for about a week after my EDD.

This depends on a lot. The area you live in and what you are getting... Typically 150+ and it depends on the photographer how many images and what type you get.

Typically more experience established photographers are 350+ and offer limited digital. While digital images sound like a good deal they are a huge risk on the photographer end.

  • I had it done with my son and they were amazing. The photographer came to our house and did them in his nursery so we would have to take him out. We did them at 6 days old. My photographer said you have the option of "sleepy pics" or "awake pics". I chose sleepy pics so she told me to have them done before 14 days old... just a tip.
  • This thread finally got my butt moving on finding a photographer.  I was wavering back and forth about the expense, but DH and I decided that we would regret not doing it. Thanks, ladies!

@Justabean3 would you elaborate a bit more on the risk that photographers face with digital images.  Is it just that their work is out there and can be copied without their consent then?  I'm just wondering because it's is so true that if you want digital images you're paying way more!

  • We are doing the in hospital photos. They have a agency that comes around and does them. You get around 20-30 pictures on a digital CD with all rights for about 100.00.  They are not real fancy, or retouched. I liked them because I felt they were more realistic than some of the overly posed with the more expensive photogs.

  • NB photos are worth every penny, IMHO. Between your LO's first 7-10 days is the best time, after 10 days, that start to lose that wrinkled NB look. (at least that's what our photographer told us with DS). They can be expensive, but shop around and compare portfolios and pricing.

  • I'm doing them! Once in a lifetime chance, in my opinion.

  • I'm having birthing pictures done and new born ones as well. I'm not using the hospital photographer. My photographer prefers to do newborn no later than 10 days old.

Digital images put the ability to change the image at the requesters fingertips. They can edit them, crop them, alter them or whatever and reproduce them (illegally). Most of the time people flat out don't care or dont even know they are hurting the lively hood or hard work of the photographer. We work hard to develop our skill set and editing takes forever.

I had a client and it was probably the best images I have ever done. They added heavy vignette and cropped them. They put them on fb and attached me. It doesn't seem like a huge deal but 1. I worked so hard to get a nice clean edit and 2. It wasn't an accurate representation of my work at all.

Just some basic reasons why digitals cost more. Another main basic reason is photography used to be based on up sale of images and prints,
Now if you have the digitals you print as much as you want and we lose A LOT of money.
  • We are very lucky in that my MIL is a professional photographer so we will definitely be getting newborn photos. She'll be at the hospital taking some pics of us and LO (NOT during labor) and then we'll be going to her studio sometime within the first week for more traditional portraits. We'll likely go back in November for Christmas pictures so we can make cards.

Like I said, we are very lucky to have MIL at our disposal but even if we didn't I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to get professional newborn pictures. They can be pricey if you go with an experienced newborn photographer but it will be worth the money to hold onto those memories!

  • I found a reasonably priced photographer and I am kind of excited. But I hate creepy posed NB photos so I found someone who does more natural photos. She charges extra for mom and dad to be in them but I want some of the family. (Why wouldn't you?)

Haha I found the bolded to be funny because I can't decide whether I find the posed newborn photos creepy or cute!

I hate the ones that put babies in acrobatic positions that look so unnatural. Personal preference. But I wince.

  • Curious whether anyone who is planning to do the newborn photos will make them Christmas themed? I know it will only be October, but then you'd be able to use them for a photo Christmas cards.

I don't know what to do! There's a Groupon for a newborn photographer in my area. I liked her work when I checked out her website, but the Groupon deal is only for a 30 minute session, instead of the typical 2 hour session for newborns (can't afford that package, unfortunately). I don't know whether to book her and risk not getting any quality newborn shots in only a half hour, or just wait til the baby is a couple weeks old and do the session sometime in November.

Anyone think October is too early to be taking Christmas-themed pics anyway?

30 mins? Man I would get one or two shots if that :/
  • The hospital I deliver at has a company that will come to your room and take pictures if you want. They take the pictures and show you the options free of charge. You can then chose if you want to purchase anything. We ended up purchasing some with our first because we were absolutely amazed at how good they turned out! The company did a fantastic job and the quality was great. They clearly have experience with the surroundings and lighting and know how to make it work. The benefit for us was we didn't have to go anywhere and our daughter was only 1 or 2 days old, so she's itty bitty. We had our favorite image blown up and it's hanging in our living room. Even now almost 2 years later DH and I still comment on how much we love the picture and how glad we are to have it.
