Anyone else using cloth diapers?

How is it going?

What kind are you using?

What is your washing routine?

This is the first time I have used them and loving it so far. Mostly just using prefolds folded in thirds inside covers and it is working well and was cheap to get started so I like that:) I have a few fitteds that I keep in the diaper bag and like those as well. Not sue how these will work though as she gets bigger. Right now I am washing once a day with regular tide. I just wash on high heat with an extra rinse and hand dry. I just stripped them for the first time the other day and that greatly increased absorbency so I will probably do that once a month.

Re: Anyone else using cloth diapers?

  • Currently using pre-folds and covers at home during the day. With DS1 we were all cloth. With this one we use more disposables. We use disposables at night b/c he hates being wet and I can't have anything wake him up. We also use disposables when we are out.

In a few weeks I'll break out my stash of AIOs and fitteds.

    We launder every other day.

  • I havent started yet but have the stash. I didnt want to buy new born diapers so I'm waiting until he fits in the cloth ones.
First Baby and a complete surprise.
Hubby has decided to be team green so we are driving friends and family crazy!
  • We switched to cloth after about 2 week (we planned it).we love it! He had a diaper rash when we switched that cleared up in a day.

We are using mostly Softbums, which is an all in 2. I have a few Thirsties (all in one) that I bought from a friend. I like those, but only use them during the day because they don't seem as absorbent as the softbums. I might add a doubler though. I highly recommend trying Softbums!

Right now we are washing every 2 days. I do a rinse and spin cycle, then sanitize cycle with heavy soil and extra rinse selected. I might be going a little overkill on the sanitizecyce but it's the only way I could get the extra hot wash setting. I use 1 tablespoon of powdered detergent I made per load and so far everything us looking good!

  • I use cloth with my 2 year old and now with the baby. I have a huge stash and before the baby did diaper laundry every 6 days, with the baby here I am doing it every 2-3 days. I do use disposables for night for the 2 year old and when we go out everyone gets disposables. It's a little harder than i thought it was going to be hence my part time use of disposables now.
  • I am. Using a mix of pockets and AIO now that he outgrew the NB prefolds and workhorses I had. About to purchase a package of best bottoms and praying I like those for daycare.

Washing every day (just because he grew out of the prefolds). Rinse on warm. Tide in a hot long cycle. Occasionally an extra rinse at the end. Dry for 50 minutes and then hang to dry the rest of the way.

This is me exactly. Hopefully going to try her on our stash of pockets this weekend. I'm nervous but hopefully she likes them

  • Yes! And it's working well! We are doing the prefolds with covers, and have a diaper service, so don't have to worry about laundering them (we live in an apartment with communal coin-operated laundry and the service just seemed to make more sense). Initially my husband complained about diaper changes taking longer with the cloth diapers, but I think a few weeks in we are both used to it, and it's working great! So far I like the Sweet Pea and the Thirsties covers the best - anyone have recommendations for covers as baby grows?

  • This is my second fluffy butt. Since DS1is still in diapers, I do laundry every day to 1.5 days to keep the load manageable. For DS2 we use prefolds in the day and fitteds at night. I have some AIOs but his thighs are still so skinny that most of them still gap a bit around the legs.

Wash routine is warm quick cycle, hot wash, two cold rinses. I use Nellies powder bc we have hard water and DS1 is allergic to Tide.

  • Loving cloth for DS. We are using prefolds or fitteds with covers for the newborn stage, and I have pockets once he outgrows these. I also have some all in ones that he's already outgrown, and some newborn pockets that just don't fit very well in the legs, so they leak.

I wash every other day or every 3 days. Sometimes I forget to wash until I'm out of diapers, so he'll be in disposables for a day until the laundry is done. I do a rinse, hot wash and an extra rinse. Prefolds/fitteds go in dryer and covers are air dried.

DH hates the prefolds but likes the fitteds. Still working on that ...

  • We are also using cloth and it's going really well. No blow outs with the cloth but a few with disposables (which we use at night, bc the wet wakes her up, and when out of the house for right now).

We are using GMD prefolds and fitteds with thirstiest covers and some blueberry mini covers.

We wash every other day with Countru Save. Quick wash on warm with high spin, heavy duty cycle on hot with extra rinse. They look and smell like new when they come out.

  • I am still in disposables because we got so many for showers and the cloth diapers seem a bit big still for her clothes to fit over. Bit I have a nice stash of bumgenius diapers waiting to be used! They will probably be laundered every day, but only because I have a daycare and have a load of laundry that has to be washed daily anyway.

  • We've been using cloth since we got home. I love them - no blowouts & DH has become a fan!

I use GMD prefolds with thirsties covers, Charlie banana OS pockets, and Best Bottoms. I like the verity; prefolds at home, BB while out & about, and pockets at night.

I wash every other day with Tide. No wash issues yet.

  • We also have no leaks. I love that. I have actually done two travel weekends with our cloth diapers and it was not as bad as I thought. I am afraid if I bring disposables into the house DH will jump off the CD wagon:) he is just starting to not mind it:)
  • I just bought a whole bunch of best bottoms today for daycare. Heeeeeeeee.

  • I have about a million different kinds. My favorite newborns were the blueberries. Hes now in Bumgenius 4.0 and freetimes, with about 8 other random kinds thrown in for good measure. The Bumgenius fits him best so far, no leaks. I want to love the Rumparooz but we always get wicking out the top. I love covers and workhorses with a snappi at night, DH is all about the AIO.

But FYI i joined a group on facebook - Fluff Love and CD Science - where they debunk cloth diaper myths, and help your wash routine. Its awesome. I ordered a free water testing kit the other day and plan on fine tuning this weekend. But they say if you have the right wash routine for your water, you should never have to strip. (For example, extra rinses in hard water just redeposits more minerals, meaning you will have to strip) Im glad to have them as a resource!
  • I started off with some AIOs and fitteds, with occasional prefolds.  Now that she can fit into her OS diapers, we have mostly pockets, though a still fitteds and I do use some prefolds with Flip covers on occasion.

Love it.  I do laundry about every third day.

  • I haven't been cloth diapering but would love to start. This thread seems overwhelming though! Where do I start? What do I need to order for my LO?

@Prncesta - you will need a minimum of 24 diapers to start.  I would suggest pocket diapers as they are easier and dry pretty quickly.  You can order all sorts of brands, from "China cheapies" to name-brand like BumGenius, or even WAHM (work at home moms).

I like my BumGenius because they fit very well right now, but the cheapies are good too and will grow with her.

I am on the "Cloth Diaper Chat" on Facebook and have seen a lot of brands recommended.  Kawaii is one of the cheaper brands that a lot of people like.  I don't own any.  You can get a whole set for under $200 on their site, or even the cheapie inserts and covers for $70 -- that's a steal!  It's a good place to start.  If you want to start there and then progress to more expensive ones, these can be resold. :)

  • I have a stash of econo bums an trifolds...waiting to get through this box of disposables and determine if I want to do this (I manage other health issues that take a lot of time). When I start it will be a hybrid of cloth & disp.

  • We love cloth diapering! This is our first one to cloth diaper, as it wasn't a common thing that I know of when the other two were little 15 and 12 years ago. DH loves CDing as much as I and even stated it's easier than disposables - no stinky trash build up and no running to the store for diapers every few weeks or on a middle of the night run.

We bought some used 100% organic cotton Clotheeze Workhorses in newborn and small which we LOVE. We use them with a few thirsties covers and a few covers from Green Mountain a friend had given us but cut the tags off so we don't know what brand, though those are our favorite. We bought a few Grovia covers and those are worthless. Not sure if they're only designed to be used with a certain insert or what, but they always end up damp immediately with the workhorses. Considering tossing them or reselling since they were ridiculously expensive compares to the thirsties.

We wash every day. We either prerinse them first in the shower and wash regular with the baby clothes, or throw them in without rinsing, still with the rest of the baby clothes, and use the heavy duty sanitize cycle. Side note, I used vinegar on a load and it discolored the linings to a faded brown inside my thirsties :( . Didn't ruin how they hold in moisture or otherwise that I've seen, though.

I really want to do wool covers so he's got all natural materials all the way thru, but I figure one step at a time. Currently I'm working on setting up reusable wipes - have them cut and ready, just need to figure out the solution to keep them in.
  • @Pinksundrops‌ I love our workhorses, too. DH likes them much better than prefolds. I am going to buy some in mediums along with a few wool covers for overnight. I've heard good things.
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • @NugsMom‌ We're about to buy a bunch in medium as well. Thanks for the reminder. Let me know how the wool goes. I'm nervous to start but want to!
  • I am loving cloth diapers! We mostly use gmd prefolds snappied with a cover but I also have a few fitteds. I wash every other day with nellies- prewash, sanitary cycle, extra rinse.

  • We tried over the weekend to get lo in cloth.  We have one size pockets (a bunch of different brands) and I thought that as long as I adjusted the rise, it would fit her well and it seemed to at first.  But she leaked through every diaper so we're back to disposables for now.  I'm hoping that in a few weeks, we can try again with better luck.  Maybe she just has skinny thighs?

At this point, I wish I had gotten a newborn stash from the get-go but I think it's too late for it to be worth the money at this point.  Plus we have a bunch of disposables from showers so we'll just go through those and try cloth again when we run out.

Try a Softbums diaper. They have toggles in the legs so you can adjust them to any size, not just the preset snap length of most. We love them!

  • We've been using them since she was a week old, I mostly use workhorses or prefolds with covers while DH prefers the pockets and AIOs. We have a lot of different brands and she finally fits into all of her one size diapers which is nice.

I do a cold rinse, hot wash w/ Nellie's, cold rinse and spin.

  • I love cloth diapering! It isnt hard at all.

As of this week she has outgrown her growvia newborn aio and we using our one sizes. I purchased mostly snaps and I am glad because I am already can tell the Velcro is not a long term investment.

MY favorites thus far are the bumgenius but I just got a few Charlie bananas and I really like how it allows me to adjust the leg sizing

We wash in hot, then cold with an extra rinse and lay to dry. So far no problems.

  • Yep, 2nd kiddo we've cloth diapered over here!
We used disposable for the first couple weeks b/c he was just too small for even the XS fuzzi bunz (same as DS1) and I was so excited when he finally fit into them!  Now he's pretty much grown out of those.  We mostly use gdiapers and fuzzi bunz but I ended up getting a few flip covers and I am LOVING them!  I'm using those for overnight with thirsties fitteds or charcoal bamboo inserts and have had very few leaks.  Those are still a bit big on him, even, so they'll last awhile.  Otherwise in larger sizes I have sunbabies (a fuzzibunz knockoff), bumgenius, and more gdiapers.
    I agree about GroVia--they suck!
I also just got a few wool covers; 2 that he can wear soon until about 6M and one large one.  I can't wait to try them out!
We wash about every other day and generally do a prewash, hot wash with extra water, cold rinse.

We also use cloth wipes; I love the Lusa organics wipes juice.

  • DD is our second CD'd baby. We love GMD prefolds & Thirsties covers. I also use flour sack towels from Wal-Mart which I'm surprisingly crazy about. DH prefers Alvababy or Sunbaby diapers but they didn't fit DS until he was about 2 months old.

  • Workhorse, prefolds, econobum and Imagine covers, Charlie Bananas and a few WAHM's are our diapers. I would have an entire stash of just Workhorses if I could. Also can't wait to try out our Simplex.

wash everyday and a half. Warm wash no detergent, hot wash with detergent and calgon, cold rinse.

I freaking love cloth diapering so far. Even though we use super boring diapers (prefolds and econobum covers) I really enjoy it.
