Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How long did you wait...

to take the baby out and about? My little guy was born at 35 wks, 4days so I anticipated waiting longer than normal. He will be 3 wks on Wed. and has been to my parents and inlaws houses and to the doctor. I'm starting to go a little stir crazy and would really like a short trip to Target or something. However, I know that if he did catch something I would totally blame myself. I really wanted to wait until the 3 wk mark but am thinking and outing today might be alright? Thoughts?...

Re: How long did you wait...

  • We were out and about almost right away (a few days after birth) but he wasn't a preemie.

  • I waited until he was 4 weeks and he was quite bundled up when we went out...it is pretty cold here. I know people go out earlier but I tend to think waiting a bit is better. He's almost 6 weeks and I am still kinda leary.

  • Go for it. ?Just don't let anyone touch him or get in his face and he will be fine.

  • I waited 2 weeks.  I was going nuts and realized it'd be better in the long run for Jack to have a sane mommy.  He's been fine.
  • The day after we came home from the hospital.  We just made sure he was bundle up and didn't let anyone get near him.
  • We went out shopping before we even brought him home for the hospital.  He has been out countless times.  I couldn't stay at home for 4 weeks and not go anywhere and not bring my baby out.  We covered him in his carseat and if people asked to see him we would say he was sleeping (which was the case most of the time).

  • We were out pretty much right away. Life had to go on! As long as he is bundled in his carseat adn such and like PP said just don't let people touch him and he will be fine. I would go crazy if we stayed in that long.
  • We were out right away.
  • Went to the mall at 1 week (I needed nursing bras/tops) and just kept him totally covered up between the the car seat shade and the shade on the stroller.  He slept the entire time.
  • DS was 35w and 6d and 1 week in the NICU.  When he came home we didn't do much for about 2-3 weeks.  After that I took him to visit family that was visiting from out of town.  I wouldn't have, but they were elderly family and I couldn't help but think this might their only chance to visit him.

When we did go out after that I usually carried him in the Baby Bjorn.  That way he was closer to me and strangers couldn't get in his face without getting into mine.

  • My babies were born at 37 weeks and we went out when they were about 2 2 weeks old.  What about taking a walk outside with your little guy?  At least that will get you out of the house.

  • We went out right away, but he was born full term.  The pediatrician would kill me if he knew everywhere we'd been with him.  I was told to wait 3 months!

  • We were out with in a couple weeks.  We didn't really fear her getting sick from others it was more we feared driving with her.  We got over that...we take her everywhere with us now.
  • we went out quickly too.  Within a couple weeks.

We just closed off the stroller and infant seat with a blanket - and off we went.

We moved into our new house one week after DDs birth -- so we were already pretty brave!

  • Just be careful... there is a reason they tell you to wait.  A fever of 100.4 if enough to cause alarm in an infant.  My DD2 was just at the ER this week for a 103.1 fever.  She is 6 weeks, but they said if she was under 4 weeks we would have been admitted, they would have done the x-ray, catheter (for urine sample) and taken blood like they did, but she would have also had a spinal tap and other invasive testing.  As it was, it took four nurses six attempts to get blood out of her little veins.

Unfortunately for us, it's not from taking her out, but the fact that we  have a toddler who got her sick and will probably continue to do so.

  • DS was born at 37 weeks, and we had him out the day after we got home from the hospital. we just didnt let anyone touch him and kept sanitizing everything. i would have gone crazy if i had stayed in the house any longer (i had been on bedrest since 31 weeks)
