first time pregnant 5 weeks along

I'm 5 weeks as of saturday my husband and I are so excited we just got married last spring but have been together for almost 9 years.  In all that time we never even once had a scare so I was a little nervous if we would get prego soon as I also turned 30 this year and we want 3.  Turns out luck was on our side first month trying it was positive.  Also like a first time mom everything i'm feeling sends me to the internet to make sure its ok.  After feeling pains in my right side yesterday I headed to the ER hoping it wasn't ectopic.  Seems its just muscles stretching but a bonus of my worry my husband and I got to see a sonogram of our new baby spec, he called it dottie.  Knowing exactly where our baby is inside of me has really calmed my nerves now to tackle exercising.  I'm so nervous to do any before the 12-13 week mark.  What are your experiences? I haven't worked out but maybe an hour once a week for the last 2 months so a bit out of shape.

Re: first time pregnant 5 weeks along

  • Hi & welcome- don't be afraid to do anything before the 12-13w mark. Just don't start up any new exercise routines (like don't decide to start running 5 miles a day). You're fine to continue what you've been doing all along. Walking is a great low-impact exercise. Always check with your doctor about exercise if you have any questions. There are some nice pilates/yoga/low impact pregnancy workouts on Netflix and You Tube.

  • You made me feel better! I've been looking up every little feeling I have too. That anxiety really does get the best of us!
  • Welcome and congrats!!
  • I was doing boot camp 3 or 4 times a week up until last week.  I'm terrified to overdo it right now so I am pulling way back but staying active.  In addition to walking my dogs every night DH and I like to hike on the weekends and I plan to start doing prenatal yoga.

Everything I have read about this topic says it is perfectly healthy and indeed important to exercise during pregnancy.  You just don't want to overheat and you need to stay hydrated.  I've also read that you should keep your heart rate down so you should be able to comfortably carry on a conversation during whatever activity you choose.

  • Thank you guys so much.  I ended up asking my physical therapist I had been seeing for an old back injury.  He recommended that I do 10 min twice a week on the elliptical but where you can keep a conversation since I haven't been doing anything.  As well as 3 dif ab excercises each day each a set of 3 with 20 reps he recommends pilate style ab work for this and loves bridges he thinks you will be able to do those the longest into your pregnancy.  He said it will help with the delivery and back pain the growing baby will give.
  • Oh and get lots of fresh air walking around
