Can I have a UO tonight?

I can't hold it in until Thursday. Dude, wtf is up with tiny houses? They are freaking stupid. My idea of hell is living with my husband and 2 kids in less than 500 sq. ft. Don't get me wrong, I don't need a McMansion (our house is ~1400 sq. ft.) but dude, 500...no fucking way.

  • Ok, yes I would live in a tiny house if I HAD to but by choice, oh hell no. And as @pobrecita‌ said, this is a trend. There is a show where people who seem perfectly normal, give up their nice, comfortable, regular houses for a tiny house. I just cannot understand it.

  • It may be a trend but it's a strange and strangely AWy one. Like keeping chickens as "pets" in densely populated urban neighborhoods around here. Dear Neighbors, no one cares about your chickens or your green roof or your gluten intake. (I cannot think this will be a *U*O though, unless you are one of the Chicken Folk.)

  • DH and I lived in a 1 bedroom studio apartment (pre-kids), and it about drove me crazy sometimes. I love him, but there are just times when I need to be in a different room. Same with kids, and maybe more so. I guess that's a FWP because there are many families who share a tiny 1-room apartment out of necessity, but I would not do a tiny house if I had the choice.
  • We're living in ~800 sq ft 2bdr now with me, H and a toddler...and soon to be our new LO.

    I already feel cramped.

Hell to the no @ a tiny house.

I was watching this show last weekend... some of the houses are interesting and I could see SURVIVING in one if necessary, but... as cool as some of the layouts and pull-out/storage tricks are.....no thank you.

DH and I have lived in 500 square feet when we were first married. Right now our place is 900 square feet and it works well.

I don't think I'd want a house that small. I'd like the option of having guests.

  • We moved from 1300 sq ft to 3500 sq ft last year. We were on top of each other in the old house, & the girls had to share a room, & we were minus 1 kid then. I know with 4 kids we will eventually use all the space in the new house but for now, while they are still little, its a bit of an overkill.

Andplusalso, we are 1 year in & I completely give up on keeping it clean. I only worry about the downstairs & the kids are responsible for the upstairs (so you know how that goes!).
  • My brother would love a mini house.  He's asked if he can build one on our property lol  I would hate it.  Ours is about 1800 right now which is plenty of space but the layout is bizarro city.  We have two rooms that are totally without a use and 100% need bigger bedrooms for the boys and bigger closets for 2 out of the 3 bedrooms.  Oh well, fwp :)

  • I live in a 600 sq feet apartment with DH and DD. It's too small for one more kid or a dog, but right now I like it. There's advantages to living in a small space - less stuff, less maintenence, less cleaning. Also I live downtown so there's lots to do within walking distance - I could live in a bigger place that required commuting everywhere.

I do have to make an effort to take DD somewhere like a park or community center every single day when she's not in daycare because she HAS to burn off some energy.
  • I think DS and my apartment is about 675-ish sqft. It's a good size for the two of us, though I'm going to get a 2 br next go-around.

  • I could never live in one of these with kids, but some of them are adorable.

Alone? I'd love it.  But it would have to be in the country so it would be nice and quiet.

  • Our 960 sq ft house was pretty perfect when it was just DH and me. 3 dogs, a kid, and another on the way has cramped our style. We have been looking at houses in the 1800-2000 range. Like others, though, I could definitely do smaller if it was just me!
