Baby girl nursery ideas??

We will be finding out the sex of our baby in a couple of weeks. I was asked yesterday by my MIL what our theme is going to be. I have a couple of ideas for a boy (trains or dinosaurs). I would love any ideas you have for boy/girl, but I'm thinking it's a girl so would love girl ideas. So far I've come up with owls or elephants. Thanks in advance, ladies!

  • Harry Potter? I want to do Harry potter everything and there are fantastic ideas on Pinterest. For DD we did rainbow fish, I was in the Navy at the time and so was her dad (my ex hubby) but even if I wasn't it was beautiful

  • I'm doing a butterfly theme.  I'm not a huge fan of pink, but I think we are going to use this fabric with green accents.

I don't buy into the nursery theme thing. It doesn't seem worth it for the 3-4 years it will be useful before you want to transition to a "big boy/girl" room.

I'm mostly using furniture we already own (rug, low dresser for changing table, armchair, wicker baskets for toys). We'll add some white bookshelves. I've got some art I want to work in already and we'll probably buy a couple more prints. It should all work for an infant or a 10-year-old.

ETA I know there will be baby specific things beyond the crib. I've already picked up an adorable kiddy clothes rack. But nothing will require major time or money to age with kiddo.
  • I'm planning to do a Peter Pan themed nursery for a boy or a girl. I feel that I can use it again if we have another, or that it can easily transition into a "big boy/girl" room when they baby gets older.

  • For my dd we did bumblebees. When we transitioned her to the big girl bed, we also changed it up to a garden theme, but her bumblebee stuff still worked.

    I'm doing hot air balloons!

I just wanted to add that we're having a girl and I'm not that big of a fan of pink and people expecting everything to be pink. We'll use some, but I thought the hot air balloon theme was a good way to bring in lots of different colors.
  • @kellbell1982 Yes! pinterest is amazing. We're doing the keys with wings as the mobile, using the "I solemly swear I am up to no good" quote above the bed, etc. We have to tear out the room completely (it's a really old house and there is lead paint, etc in that room so everything is getting stripped out) so I'm having issues picturing the room and what else we need right now.

We didn't do a theme - we just stuck with matching colors. Painted the room baby blue and had brown furniture and pink/brown bedding/accessories.

ETA - this baby will share the guest room where it will be grey/yellow.  We are team green so we like to keep in neutral.

  • I have had 2 children already and so far no themes.  I am not a "theme" type of person.  I like to keep things eclectic, and re-usable in the future- not a fan of everything matching.  Add in pieces you like, and keep them coordinated-they don't have to all match a theme.
  • I like Where the Wild Things Are for a boy. I also like elephants or carnival (mostly because a local artist has an awesome painting that I love with a slight carnival theme to it) for either sex and paisley for a girl.
  • Our DD's bedding was farm animals, and will be using the same for this one.

I love the idea of butterflies, birds, owls, bunnies, cats.

My daughters room was redone when she turned a year to more girly bedding and hanging decorations. It's "Paris" themed. We reused her birthday decorations for her room.

  • Boy or girl, it will be cowboys and Indians! Tee pees, horses, arrows, cows... Anything western or Native American I love!
  • I like Where the Wild Things Are for a boy. I also like elephants or carnival (mostly because a local artist has an awesome painting that I love with a slight carnival theme to it) for either sex and paisley for a girl.

My friend had a daughter in February and she used Wild Things for her.
  • I know they aren't baby colors, but I really like red and black. I'm starting with that. I like Mickey Mouse for a boy, and lady bugs for a girl.
I'll probably change my mind a dozen more times before I actually decorate anything :)
  • With my son we didn't know what we were having so we did neutral. It's a very light green with white furniture & baby animal bedding & decorations. He just moved across the hall at age 3 so now the baby boy or girl will take the nursery. I did see an owl set that I love. I also love the where the wild things are & nautical!
  • For DD I went with a bird houses and roses theme. Her bedding was mostly pink with white and baby blue accents and had different flowers on it, then her mobile was birds and I decorated her room with cute birdhouses I got at Hobby Lobby. For DS we did a cowboy theme.
  • We did owls for DD. It turned out really cute! FWIW some will say yellow is a bad color for a nursery, but I have had no adverse sleeping habits....
  • We didn't really do a theme, we just picked colors so that we had a lot of options. We went with pink, cream, and gray and it's been great, very versatile and will be fine as she grows too.

Definitely check out Pinterest, there are SO many great ideas!

  • We were team green the first time around, and our nursery is classic winnie the pooh.
    image
  • Winnie the Pooh!
  • Maybe this is a UO, but I think nursery themes based on objects are kind of tacky.  I'm just going to concentrate on a few colors, navy, gray and a teal/peacock blueish color.  That will be it if it's a boy and if it's a girl then maybe throw in a few pops of hot pink but I think the teal works for a girl or boy.

This is pretty much what we did with DS's nursery. I bought all dark furniture and coordinated things in dark blue, chartreuse, and beige. I'm just too lazy for themes, I guess. Maybe that can be my FFMC. Although I like to tell people the "theme" of his room is "baby man cave."

Oh man just when I thought that I couldn't love you more. This is me. Light pink & teal for a girl (with pops of hot pink) and navy and white for a boy. The boy will have pops of a sports theme (mainly new England sports teams).

  • I'm not a "theme person" but I love to decorate nevertheless.  The walls are the same color throughout our house (kind of a beigy-gray), which means I can switch things up easily.  The fabrics and pops of color in DD's room are orange and pink (more muted tones) with white furniture.  DS's fabrics are red with pops of yellow, which, depending on the pattern in the fabric you used, could still look super cute for a girl (I had his white crib painted red and it's adorable).  This little one will camp out with us in our room for several months then move in with big sister when it's time to move her out of her room.  Will probably makeover the girls' room again then.  I'm really digging light purple with turqouise accents right now, so we'll see.

We're putting in a wood floor (well, that snap-together stuff) and painting the walls a neutral color. We're also spending a decent amount of money on a nice crib  and dresser. The crib is convertible and will go all the way up to a full bed. So we shouldn't have to buy the kid new furniture ever - this stuff should last until he's ready to move out.

So neutral colors and then decorating with pops of colors in jewel tones. I've bought a ton of art prints, and I've been buying them for years - specifically for a nursery. Don't much care about the sex of the kid when it comes to decorating. I just want to create a calm, interesting space with a neutral base that will last forever. Or at least until we eventually move.

Edited to add: I am addicted to this site. It has some really interesting nursery projects in it.
  • Does there have to be a theme?

  • Well I'm doing jungle theme for a boy or girl, that's an idea for you.
  • We didn't do a theme with DD. We just picked colors and did a big tree wall stencil. We will do the same this time around. It will either be light gray and teal or light gray and yellow.

I don't want to have to redo the room in a couple years, so I tried to make it be able to transition to a big kid room.

I have the same bedding set in DDs room, love it. But what I did was hang the quilt on the wall above the crib to make it a big piece of art. Really simple to do this to any quilt, just get a 3/4" dowel from Michaels, a roll of 1/2-3/4" wide ribbon, and a bunch of safety pins.

Lay the dowel at the top of the quilt (about 2-3 inches down from the edge). Cut the ribbon into 3" strips and place along the length of the dowel in small intervals, then safety pin the ends of each ribbon above and below the dowel. Mount 2 small command strip hooks on the wall at the height you need and 4-5" in from the edge of the quilt and hang by the dowel. Voila - you've got a beautiful wall hanging without having to buy a special quilt hanger.

  • We did owls. However, now we have a second baby on the way, so maybe should have gone with more neutral colours. Either way, I'm not changing it. Lol we

I meant to say we worked too hard painting it! I was going to attach a picture, but my phone is being a POS and won't do the things I want it to

  • After having 2 boys and finally getting a girl this time I am all about a girly nursery, but my colors are green and lavender, which is my favorite color. The bedding I am getting has hibiscus like flowers on it, so good for baby and toddler and even an older girl.
  • Not super into themes, and I want the room to still look like it belongs in my house. Thinking of just doing tan, dark blue, and white, then adding either green or coral accents once we know boy or girl.
