Tummy Time?

DD is a little over 7 weeks old and we try to do tummy time everyday, but she really hates it. She'll put up with it for a little while, but usually ends up screaming until I turn her back over.

She will hold her head up when I'm holding her and if you sit her up, she doesn't fuss, but once you lay her on her tummy, she gets pissed.

I'm a FTM, so not sure if this is normal if something is wrong or weird.

  • It is Normal. DS hated it too. Just do it for little bits of time every day - it doesn't need to be forever or until she's frantic. She'll get it :)

  • Totally normal! Just keep doing it for 5-10 minutes a few times a day. Eventually, she should get used to it and stop crying so much.

  • Mine hates it too, though I make her do it a couple of times a day. She can lift her head up and turn it but still gets pissed off -- I have to pick her up right before the fuss becomes a wail or she has a meltdown.
  • Another tummy time hater in our house. I just have her go as long as she can last before she gets upset.

  • Yep, that's norm. It seems almost all babies hate tummy time. This LO one doesn't mind it so much as my last only because he has a bit of reflux and it feels good to him.

Don't worry to much about it though, my DD despised it and I know it helps build their back and neck moving abilities, but Lili was walking at 10 months. Woop-woop!! Take that tummy time!!

  • We do tummy time on our chests. Not sure if that qualifies or not but he sure loves it a whole lot more and lifts the whole upper half of his body with his head.

This is what I usually do. I try to do it at least once a day on her play mat, but she doesn't like it or just rolls over. But she ends up on my chest throughout the day. She is doing a great job lifting her head and chest so I think we're doing something right!

That counts!  I do more of that than actual "tummy time".  I'd just do it here and there as long as LO can go without getting mad.  Every little bit helps!

  • It depends with DD some times she is fine and sometimes she hates it, I lay down beside her and let her see my face to calm her down when she gets upset.

  • DS hates tummy time too. He tries to roll to his back or starts grunting before he just screams. He typically lasts about 3 minutes trying to look around and turns his head. He likes it much better on my chest and actually smiles and scoots across my chest.
  • LO doesn't like tummy time on the floor but he will lay on our chests or he loves to be propped up on the back of the love seat looking out the window, lol. He's like a cat.

I also sometimes prop him up on the Boppy and he'll tolerate that for a couple extra minutes.

totally the norm.  We also use the boppy and prop dd up on it so that all the pressure isn't solely on her tummy yet she can still work on her neck/arm muscles.

  • Exactly the case here too. She tolerates it for about 5 minutes and then starts fussing. However, she lifts her head more when she's a little frustrated, so I'll let her fuss for an extra minute to give those muscles a little work out.

  • DS is now 8 weeks and used to hate it, but we just kept having him do it and now he's fine. Only now he rolls and figured out how to get onto his back and back onto his tummy If he wants to. So "Tummy time" is more of rolling time now.

  • DD hates it too. I try to do it until she's very frustrated a few times a day. I'm hoping everyday she'll tolerate a little more.

  • DS hated it. DD doesn't m ind it.
I leave her down fro about 10min at a time like 3-4 times a day.
This was recommended by my pedi with DS, so I will continue with DD the same way.

  • Sometimes we get 5+ mins out of her at a time, sometimes I'm lucky to get 1 minute before she cries. I think if you do it several times a day, whether on a mat or you, it adds up & is just fine.
