Pregnant after a Loss

Dizzy spell with ringing ears?

Okay ladies, talk to me about dizzy spells.
I've never really had one until this afternoon. I've never felt anything like that. I was so weak and dizzy out of nowhere, then my ears started ringing, I was sweating - it got worse before getting better..

I lay down, drank a couple glasses of water, and it slowly passed. My ears were ringing for a bit though...

Immediately I looked for baby boy's heartbeat with my Doppler - found it. He seems okay.

That was just weird. Of course I have a call in to my doctor, just thought I'd see what you have to say.
Any experiences like this?

Re: Dizzy spell with ringing ears?

  • How scary!  I'm glad you and LO are okay.  I'm not sure about the ringing ears, but I passed out shortly after I found out I was pregnant, and I ended up getting checked out at the ER.  They think it was from low BP and a sudden drop in BP from standing up, which is apparently really common in pregnancy.  Can you go to either your OB or PCP to have them check you out?  If it is BP related, the biggest thing they told me was hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

  • So sorry that happened! I'm only 5 weeks but my ears were ringing like crazy a few days ago and that never happens to me. When I was pregnant with DS I had lots of dizzy spells. My iron was always fine but you might want to have your checked just in case. I found that drinking tons of water helped as did snacking throughout the day. I'd have some sort of snack (yogurt, fruit, nuts, cheese, etc) like every hour and a half at least. It's definitely no fun to feel that way! Take care of yourself.

I get spells like that, but I do suffer from vertigo/Meniere's disease. Right before I got my BFP, I had a nasty spell and that was one of the things they asked me (if I could be pregnant). I know it seems to be worse if I get dehydrated, so make sure you stay hydrated! I take Meclizine if I am nauseous (OTC Bonine or Dramamine same thing) and I was told it is safe during pregnany. Luckily, I haven't needed it, but soothing to ask your Dr if symptoms persist. I've also been slightly anemic this pregnancy (on lovenox) so my hematologist has me on iron supplements-says dizzy spells can stem from being anemic.

    Good luck! Vertigo sucks!

  • I had a brief fainting spell earlier in this pregnancy when I got out of bed to fast. I know what it was because it's happened to be in the past but it was basically exactly like you described but I also completely blacked out for a second. It happens when your blood pressure suddenly plummets and can happen for all kinds of reasons. I've had it happen when I've been too hot, felt claustrophobic and when I haven't eaten in too long. Usually it's nothing serious but can be a symptom of another problem. Mention it to you doc just incase.

  • I think dizzy spells are pretty common, and this just sounds like a really intense one. I have low blood pressure and frequent anemia, so I've had hard core dizzy spells, including the ringing, periodically throughout my life.

...Aside from that I've got no wisdom! I'm planning on asking my obgyn about mine tomorrow morning, so I'll let you know what she says. :)

Glad you and LO are okay!

  • This happened to me when I was pregnant with DD. Low blood pressure is what the dr said. It was super scary and happened a few more times during that pregnancy.
  • Thank you for all these replies ... It does sound both common and scary.

My doctor did call and agreed it sounds like low blood pressure. I've been taking regular iron supplements for a while now (still being fairly close to my pregnancy with Finn) just trying to stay on top of any anemia issues ...

I'm not feeling so good. In bed now..just weak and a little dizzy. Hoping some dinner in bed and a sleep will help.
    Very scary!
