Anyone else in nap purgatory?

edited September 2014 in Stay at Home Moms
So dd can't make up her damn mind about napping. Many days she will stay up right through and crash around 630-7. Then other days she has intentions of staying up but gets exhausted around 3-4, naps and then can't get to bed until 930. It's driving me mad.

  • Yep!  She goes down fine for DH but not me and I'm tired of fighting with her so I give her a choice. Right now she is doing 1 hour of quite time and will go to bed early tonight.

  • That was the moment in my girls lives where I cut the naps cold turkey. I don't mess with bedtime. I found that if my kids took a nap they then stayed up far too late then were overtired, cranky messes the entire next day, which led to falling asleep, then staying up too late and became a cycle. I would practically dance on my head while driving to make sure they didn't fall asleep in the car if we were driving any time after 3 because even a 5 minute car nap destroyed their sleep and therefore their moods for the next few days. It was awful. For us the difference between napping and not was 12-13 hours of sleep per 24 hours versus under 10, so it left them severely sleep deprived.

We never did quiet time because they risked falling asleep during it.

It is literally impossible to keep dd awake when she is tired. Home girl will fall asleep sitting up playing with her dollhouse in her room. It's a talent,

DS1's witching hour is 3-4, so honestly if we aren't out and about, that is when he gets the ipad then if he is looking sleepy.  I know, flame away.  But is there maybe some sort of super favorite thing you can use to bride her to keep her awake then?

We have an iPad and she enjoys it but if she's exhausted there is literally nothing that can keep her awake. She has fallen asleep sitting in a chair holding the iPad before.

Ugh, Emma was like that. I would hand her a well-timed snack, make her get up and dance and basically not take my eyes off of her. The only thing that stopped us from using screen time during that witching hour was that she would fall asleep in front of the TV and we don't have an ipad to give her to play games on.

  • We're right there with you. If he gets a good nap during the day, he'll crash around 8. But, if he gets a crappy nap and then falls asleep again later in the afternoon, he won't crash until 9 or 10pm and even then it's a struggle getting him down. I'm trying to not let him nap after 3 but super cranky toddler tantrums are not fun!

  • Yup, and DD is only 2.5! It's so depressing... I was counting on one more year of napping at least! But she hasn't napped even once in over 3 weeks, so what I originally thought was just a phase is looking more and more like it's our new normal. *sob* At least she's being cooperative about a daily quiet time.....

Sugar?  In all seriousness, maybe a well time snack?  But yeah, it blows.

I would give her sugar packets to avoid. Lol. The worst part it's not an everyday predictable thing and there's no rhyme or reason. One minute she's playing with a toy and the next she's asleep on her bedroom floor. There's no specific time either--She just passes out between 230-430 randomly.

  • I've been there sista, except my kid won't fall asleep doing anything so I do t have to work to keep him up. But I would cut naps and do whatever I needed to do to have a good bedtime. I cut my 10 month old off napping at 4.

  • YES. Not too long ago, baby and toddlers afternoon naps were aligning. It was lovely.

Now, toddler is dropping the nap and baby's nap has shifted a little later. I went from a 2 hour break to zero.

ODS has had a hard time adjusting to the lack of nap even with an earlier bedtime, too. 5pm is not a pretty time right now.

  • YES! DS1 started dropping his nap about a month ago. It has been awful but if he does nap, he's up until 9, at least. His behavior was terrible at the start of the transition - acting super hyper, tantrums, just overall odd behaviors. This has since been much better but he's still cranky in the afternoon. I just want to get over this hump for good, but I can see the light.
