SO the holidays (NBR)

Last year I was promoted and now manage a group of about ten women ranging from early 20s to mid 60s.

What do I give them as a gift for the holidays that is about $10-$15 each as a small gesture that I appreciate them. I prefer to give them all the same thing but find that gift cards are a bit...impersonal. Alcohol, chocolate, coffee are out of the question as everyone has food restrictions (vegetarian, allergies, religious reasons--not all three but these are the main reasons).

Husband suggested gourmet popcorn and a plant in a diy pot (gold leafed or whatnot, since it's up my alley). I'm not sure though.

I'm also trying to think of something for my partner to show her how awesome she is. I'm open for a bigger price tag for her gift.

Any other suggestions?

  • I know for secret Santa type things My friends and I have gone to bath and body works. You can usually find some nice lotions, soaps, ect for $15. Especially around the holidays, they have pretty good sales.

  • I second the bath and body works. Candles always make a nice gift too- but those could be pricey. What about a nice travel mug or a mug and some hot chocolate, tea, or coffee packets? I got girls I work with the one year a pair of cozy socks and a small bottle of lotion to go with it from bath and body. You could always check Pinterest for some DIY gift ideas.

  • I like the planter idea. I know you face food restrictions but at Christmas time I make homemade chex mix and put it in quart mason jars with a festive ribbon. People seem to appreciate it.

Just go with the gift cards and let them buy something they like.  Don't buy candles/lotions etc anything that has a smell.  People are very particular about what smells they like and allergies apply there too.  Plants require effort on the receivers part.

I wouldn't want lotions, candles, plants or popcorn; I'd want a gift card! I have one million mugs! You could get personalized cards.

  • May Designs has nice stationary and notebooks you can personalize. I don't tend to like random candles or lotion either.
  • FWIW my boss gave us all Starbucks gift cards one day last winter and I was delighted. I bought myself a gingerbread frappuccino. I don't normally spend my own money on $4 coffee drinks so it actually was a treat.

  • I love these for groups.  You can pair them with a cooking utensil or decorating tool, something personality fitting.  So personal but not favoritismy.  Pretty allergen and vegetarian safe.

  • I got my employees the daily tear off calendars for their desks. I knew enough about each of their interests to get one that was personal, yet they all got the same gift. For example, our admin loves dogs, so I got her a puppy one and she was delighted. It was also a fun conversation piece when I was at her desk to talk about the puppy of the day.

As you know, around the holidays the malls have the calendar kiosks and stores and they usually run about 10 each

  • I like the idea of the Amex cards except isn't there a $5 activation fee per each? I'd do Starbucks except one of the women doesn't drink anything from there and thus it's not very thoughtful in her instance. (She's actually the hardest as I'm the least familiar with her and have the least in common with her. I feel if I gave her a Starbucks gift card, she'd give it to her daughter. But I really have a hard time knowing what she does or eats for fun.)

DH thought the amount of the gift card wasn't worth it. Hence the other reason I was not considering giving one.

I also love the idea of pens.

    Thanks everyone for the suggestions

  • I like the desk calendar idea. My boss did this for my office one year and I always liked to see what the new quote was going to be (mine was a quote a day, another lady got kittens, etc). Pair this with a lunch outside of the office and a sincere card and I think you are good!
