Oh, the uncertainty!

Friday afternoon my OB sent me to L&D to be monitored because my BP was on the higher side. He wanted to be safe since I had mild pre eclampsia with my last pregnancy. After 2 hours of normal readings, and perfect test results, I asked to be released. They told me that the doctor wanted me to stay for awhile because my contractions were consistently 5 minutes apart for the 2 hours I was being monitored. She checked me and I was 1cm. Now of this were my first rodeo I'd be freaking out but by 36 weeks in my last pregnancy, I was already 3cm and ended up having to be induced. The doctor ordered medication to stop contractions and after 2 rounds, it still wasn't working. He kept stressing that he wants me to make it to 37 weeks. The whole time I'm secretly rolling my eyes thinking he's over reacting. After some persuading, he let me go home to "wait it out" until my appointment tomorrow. Since Friday my contractions are still consistent and getting a bit stronger. I'm maybe starting to think that the doctor wasn't over reacting and this baby could actually be working his/her way out sooner than expected. I thought BH contractions were just for practice but according to my nurse, they are strong enough to be thinning my cervix. I never had contractions with my son and if it wasn't for an induction, he'd probably still be in there! I guess every pregnancy is different but I just hate all this uncertainty!

Re: Oh, the uncertainty!

  • I've been having contractions pretty consistently for the past 3 weeks.  My OB told me that a change in character was worth looking into. Can you go into the office today and just have them check to see if your cervix has changed?

That said, if the contractions aren't getting longer or closer together, then it probably isn't active labor.  Did they give you anything like Procardia that you could try? I'm taking the Procardia as needed because it will slow down BH but not active labor, which helps me to know the difference.

Eh, I'm okay waiting until tomorrow's appoitnment. I'm really not too worried... I know what true labor contractions feel like so if I feel them, I'll certainly go in! I've been having BH contractions since 20 weeks though so I'm not too worried. In the back of my head I still feel like I know my body better and that they are just over reacting. Maybe I'm just too relaxed about it because it's my second baby. I think I'll start getting the house in order just in case :)
