Baby wearing recommendations

DD was never much for baby wearing, but I am hoping DD #2 will be. We have an Ergo, but I really did not like it for her as an infant. The wraps, like the Moby, look so much more comfortable. What are your recommendations? Is the Moby worth it? Is there another one out there you like?

Re: Baby wearing recommendations

  • I only had a baby bjorn when DD was tiny and I thought she hated being worn and then I discovered my ring sling once she was 6 months old and it was amazing.  I am actually sad I didn;t know about it earlier because I think it would have saved me so much agony in those first colicky months! ;)

I have a Maya wrap, got it from amazon.  I like it better than the Moby because it was a ring sling so much easier to put on, even in parking lots and stuff in the winter.  It was basically all I took DD shopping in from 6 months until 15 months or so.  I still have used it occasionally since if she is being especially clingy.

I think the Moby would be a great option too but you would have to learn and master it before the baby came.  At least for me I didn't crack the thing out of the package until I was already sleep deprived and I watched the DVD on the thing and never managed to get comfortable enough putting it on to be able to do it without a mirror.  That being said it is super soft feeling and if you do it right I would bet that infants would love the thing.  I have a mom friend that mastered hers and she even could breastfeed in the thing.  She used to take her newborn to movies and just chill out and the little bug would just cuddle up and nurse.  I was so envious!

Anyway, I love my Maya and the Moby also is great. ;)

  • Stretchy wraps are nice, but short lived- if you are planning on exclusively using an ssc after it would be good for a newborn.
If you want something more long lived I would go with a ring sling or a woven wrap- good for newborns & we still use ours a lot with Ben

  • I have a moby and hate it. So I bought just a cheap knock off baby Bjorne because I didn't know how much I would like wearing (backaches and such). I wore her a lot, then my mom bought me an Ergo and I fell in love with it. I actually was just tearing the house apart the other day looking for it to make sure I have it when the new babies arrive. I told MH if I couldn't did it we were buying a new one. If I weren't pregnant I would still wear DD.

  • I have a Moby and it was hard to learn and a bit hard to put on...I felt like I sometimes didn't have it right and would watch you-tube videos frequently to try to improve.  It's kind of a lot of fabric so not that easy to tuck in your bag.  It also made me look kind of obese and I would try to just keep it on when I took M out for a short while if I was planning to wear her again soon, and I just looked very large.  I had a very fast grower, and it was not comfortable to wear her for very long at all.  They are all over craigslist, so you could probably try one that way.  Or try a k-tan, because I have heard they are the same but easier and smaller.  I bought a Beco Butterfly II on craigslist and it has a newborn insert that comes with it.  I am going to try that with new LO but I'm not sure it would work until LO is a little less floppy.

Moby was good when dd was an infant. Then I switched to a beco gemini. Now we use the ergo mostly because it's easier to get her on my back.

  • I loved the k'tan when DS was a newborn and for about 6 months after. It was so comfortable and easy to put on, but then he got too big for it. At that point I switched to an Ergo and also love that. I stopped wearing him when I got pregnant.

  • I loved my Moby for DS when he was a newborn until 5-6 months, and DS was a fast grower.  I received an Ergo as a gift when he was about 8 weeks old, but didn't start to use it until he could go in it with his legs out (I didn't have the insert).  I didn't find the Moby hard to figure out.  I would often put it on at home, go the store/shopping, and slip LO in the wrap in the parking lot or backseat of the car if it was cold out, then I'd zip my jacket up over him or throw a blanket around him to get inside.  He would sleep for hours in the Moby, and if he was having a particularly grumpy day, I'd stick him in the Moby and vacuum, and the little man was out and comfortable.  I never tried nursing in it, but I've been youtubing a little to get tips on nursing in a Moby for our new little one.  I anticipate needing to multi-task more this time around.

I know there are others out there who say their LO didn't like to be worn, and I really wanted to babywear, not only for the bonding it can create but also for the convenience factor, so I started putting DS in the Moby wrap within the first day or two home.  I started out at maybe 2-5 minutes, and then worked my way up.  It became a God send for calming a cranky baby, getting some light cleaning done, being able to get some fresh air, cooking, or family gatherings when he'd just get tired of being passed around and over-handled.

Also, the Ergo was incredible once DS was big enough, super easy!  I'd still be using it if I wasn't pregnant.  If you're not picky about the color, I've found Ergo's in the clearance section of my local Target store.  They are online returns, so the store can't put them back on the shelf the way they could if you bought it directly from the store, so I often find them to be priced around $75 rather than the $100-$125 they are on the shelf.  I got my sister's Ergo from Petunia Pickle Bottom's online outlet store for $80, and it's in a pattern way cuter than anything I've seen on the Ergo store, Amazon, or at the store.

If I were to do it all over again, I'd probably opt for a woven wrap over a stretchy Moby just because you can use it longer, but I can't justify the cost because I already have a Moby and an Ergo.

  • I have a Beco that i loved from about 5 months to 15 months for an every day sort of carrier, but for that newborn stage the Moby was a lifesaver. Wrapping is so snuggly awesome, and full of sleepy dust. Thoren lived in that thing for the first 12 weeks, then went through a carrier aversion phase, and by the time he wanted to be worn again he was heavier than i was comfortable using a stretchy on. I also have a Didymos woven wrap that is hands down my favorite. There is a bit or a learning curve to wrapping with wovens, but once you nail it? They are so stinking versatile. I wish i had found it before DS was born, it may have been our only carrier.
