2nd Trimester

did anyone else have to wait until after 20 weeks for u/s?

My doctor was going to schedule mine at 19 weeks but when I went to make the appt at the front desk the lady said that the ultrasound tech won't do it until after 20 weeks. My appt is a day before 21 weeks, I'm annoyed they are making me wait that long. Did this happen to anyone else?

  • W/ my last pg I had to wait till 22 weeks b/c of scheduling issues.  I know waiting sucks!...

  • That does seem a late.  Did they do one at your first appointment to measure the fetus?  Well, I guess one good thing is that by them waiting so long you're at least going to be able to see what you're having (if you want to know).  I would be really frustrated too!

  • I did mine at 18 weeks b/c we practically begged and pleaded. That being said, I kind of wish we had waited longer so that we could have been given a more definite answer on the sex. I know it sucks having to wait so long but just remember the longer you hold out, the better.
  • My u/s tech wouldn't do any of the "big" u/s until atleast 19 weeks. I had mine around 19w and 4 days. 20 weeks isn't bad at all. Some people have to wait until 22 w. Time will fly by, just be patient.
  • I did mine at exactly 20 weeks. ?We were not allowed to do it any earlier. ?The waiting was tough, but totally worth it :)

  • I am not having mine until 21 weeks on the nose, well right now, unless something opens up before then.  I am annoyed too, but I guess it will hopefully be more accurate at that point.

  • Ours is at 20 weeks and a few days. I'm glad, the baby will be more developed and we've all seen the stories about mistakes about the baby's sex at early u/s.
  • Our first u/s was at 19.5 wks. The only way we would have had an earlier u/s was if we were having complications or unsure of dates. (We charted.) The wait was hard, but worth it.

The bigger baby is, the more you see. You'll get to see a litter person rather than a bean...that's super exciting. We went again for an u/s at 27 wks..and the differences compared to our first ultrasound were incredible.

    Best of luck!

  • I get one everytimeI go to the dr.'s office. My big U/s is at 20 wks.
  • Mine was exactly at 20 weeks and they still were not able to see everything bc he didn't want to cooperate..LOL.  So I am having another in 2 weeks.

  • My DR office outsources all ultrasounds to a special facility.  When I made my appointment I was told the window for the "big" ultrasound was 17.5 weeks to 22 weeks.  I scheduled mine a bit on the early side, at 17 weeks 2 days, and both the ultrasound facility and my doctors office agreed it was fine timing.

We were told that some measurements can be difficult to assess if the ultrasound is performed too early--particularly the heart valves--but we didn't have any problems and we found out with 100% certainty that we're having a boy.  The tech said that if she had any problems getting specific measurements that she would just have us come in at a later date to have them measured.

We were also told that if we were interested in finding out the sex, it was better to schedule the ultrasound closer to 20 weeks.

  • I had 2 early ultrasounds - 1 at 8 weeks and 1 at 14 weeks because of a previous miscarriage and a blood spot found at the 8 week ultrasound.  I was originally supposed to have my main ultrasound at 20 weeks, but my doctor set it up for almost 26 weeks! I was irate when I found this out at 17 weeks, so I went to a special ultrasound clinic instead at 18 weeks because we really wanted to find out the sex before Christmas!
  • My insurance doesn't cover any ultrasounds. So I paid out of pocket (only $50~plus a 2 hour drive) to get a 3D ultrasound. I was 23 weeks and 4 days.

  • We found out at 18w, but a friend of mine is nearly 22w and her doctor keeps lecturing her about doing the big u/s too early and then being disappointed because it's "still so early and babies don't all make it." But it's her first baby, and everything appears fine so far. I'm pretty sure if she waits as long as her dr. wants her to, baby is going to be in such a tight ball that they won't be able to tell the sex.

  • my Dr wanted 22 weeks, but I talked him into 21 weeks!  seems so far away!
  • I had one done at 6 weeks for dating purposes, and to make sure I had a viable pregnancy....after that no US's until after 20 weeks.
  • I had mine right at 20 weeks.  I could of scheduled it the week before but they talked me in to waiting another week to be for sure.  I'm glad I did.
  • Sorry to say...no. My OB actually surprised me at my 12-week appointment and said that we could get the "big" ultrasound at my next appointment (16 weeks, 2 days)! DH and I thought we would have to wait until 20 weeks, but we ended up finding out before Christmas instead!!!

  • I had mine at 20w 1d, but it was nice to have it so late, IMO.  The baby was more developed and the sex was really clear.  If I'd gone in at 16 weeks it might have been a bit less developed and distinct.
  • I was 21w with my 1st pregnancy and 24w with this one.

    You'll live.

  • I went when I was 20 weeks and my doctor was at a different office that day and had to cancel my appt. Now I hae to wait until 24 weeks! Needless to say I am more than a little p/o'd.
  • Getting my big u/s on Monday, and I'm 21 wks. I don't think it's makes much of a difference unless the measurements are "time-sensitive" like the NT scan was at 12-13 wks.
  • Posts like this always make me nervous about scheduling mine at 19 weeks, even though my OB said it was perfectly fine...fortunately I know tons of people (both IRL and on here) who have found out accurately at 18-19 weeks :) But waiting until 20w or later won't be bad, it'll go by quickly!
  • im going on tuesday to get my u/s done. the further along you are, the better the anatomy is, which makes it easier to see if there are any problems.
  • I'll be having my big ultrasound at 21 weeks.
