Winter Gear

As the fall and winter season approach I was wondering what winter gear you are planning to get for your LO? Last year we didn't play to much in the snow, and we had a one piece bunting. But this year I think will be the year to enjoy being outside. Input on size would be awesome too... Are you sizing up, staying where they are currently etc. Carter's has coats that are 4 in 1 and turn into a jacket I'm thinking we should go with 24mths so DD can use jacket in spring as well but she is barely in 18mths. So confused!!

I am just so torn. Right now she can wear some stuff 18mths but with winter and school, I just don't know. I hate trying to decide future sizes for fear of spending the money and growth spurts... UGH!! I just want to move somewhere were its FALL all year round!! :)

  • I got a multi piece/layering coat on clearance in 2T at the end of winter last year. Hopefully it will fit...she's in 18m now. I have the same concerns as PP about the coat and car seat issue. I will probably just put her in a warm fleece and bring the coat for if they go outside.

  • Last year we did a fleece hoodie zip up jacket with mittens and a hat for the car--our garage is connected but not heated..wed start it up before we left..then I left a winter coat there but I dont think she used it much...she kept him bundled in the garage in a stroller wiht blankets with her while the kids played outside.  We will need to get a jacket, snow pants and boots..Im thinking 2T..right now he is in 18 months and some are getting snug on him.  I think well have trouble with pants being too long though in 24month size.
  • Winter gear I buy:

    Pullover polar fleece
Thermal shirts & long sleeve tshirts from children's place.
    Jeans and other thick pants
    Zipper hoodie
Coat (after 1 year since they go out at daycare)
    Mittens
    Hat
Boots (these are what DS1 had last year & I'll probably get them for both boys this year: https://m.payless.com/search/9754.html )
    Tennis shoes
    Good socks

Basically I use layers or a light jacket since our winter temps here vary. Usually it's teens to 70s, but last year we had -20. I do the backwards coat thing in the car just in case we got stranded when it's below freezing, but I also have hooded blankets I used for them as babies that we keep in the car.

I've never gotten a snowsuit, although I get the winter coats & lined pants at Meijer. I like their coats because they are warm but thinner & they're not walking around like the kids in Christmas Story. Meijer has matching snow pants but it's unlikely we'd use those since we're in Kentucky so I've never purchased them. We get more rain & ice than snow. ;)

  • We live in NC so our winters are actually really mild. We get snow maybe once and it's gone within 12-36 hours. I have a reversible coat from Rugged Bear. One side is fleece and the other is water proof. Usually sweaters or a sweatshirt is enough, if not I have this. R is currently a 2T so I bought it in 3T because he won't need it till December. Zulily will have Columbia jackets on sale occasionally. They have some that are really warm but thinner for the car seat. Full price in a store they are expensive but I always try to find sales, promo codes, outlets etc.
  • Thank you all for your input its greatly appreciated. I'm in the Cincy Metro area and winters here can vary. However, last year we got blasted and with DD being more active and school I'm just trying to determine what is going to be best. I think my biggest problem is what size to get, the last thing I want is her swimming in it.

  • @hbrockman01‌ I'm not far from you. :)

  • I live in super cold northern new york.  Cold weather gear is something that I look around for the best deals on and buy the best that I can.  It snows October - April some years.

We had a north face tosty toes bunting last year and she was outside often between daycare and weekends with us.  I found a screaming deal on a north face bib snowpants a couple weeks ago and a deal on a jacket last spring.  I did size 2t - she's tall, but there seems to be enough room to grow.

  • We have to get all the gear for daycare. Boots, coat, snow pants, hats/gloves. I am hoping they use it more than all the summer/water gear we had to buy for literally 4 water days. I was so mad to waste money for just 4 times.

  • We live in Texas and the weather can change so much. So I have her a big coat, pullover sweater, light jacket, and a cute pea coat. Then she has her pants, boots, and etc.

  • I have been thinking (stressing?) about this too.  I just bought LO a fleece which should work for fall and some of winter.  I think in the carseat she could wear the fleece and we could add a blanket or two if needed. But I didn't really think to buy a size up, I'll have to try it on her and see how much room she has.  I have not bought anything for "real" winter.  I think that at daycare they go outside most days so I am worried about her being too cold.  I'm thinking a winter coat, hat/gloves, probably boots too.  I didn't think about leaving stuff at daycare but that makes sense.  What are you guys doing about gloves/mittens so they don't get lost?  Do they still have those clips that attach to the sleeves of the coat like when we were kids?
  • I am just assuming the hats mittens will get lost.

  • They generally keep the mittens in the cubby at daycare. I haven't had issue with anything getting lost. You could put their initials on the tags inside. Daycare was pretty good about taking the fleece on & off the kids last year when it was really cold too.
