January 2013 Moms

Moms of 2+

I know we have some moms with more than one LO here. As I get closer to my due date I'm definitely having more moments of "oh god what have I gotten into!". So, for all of us who are expecting (or TTC) would you mind sharing some thoughts with us? What is the age difference between kids, what are the best and worst parts and what can we look forward to in the first year (the good, the bad, the ugly). I guess I'm just looking to prepare myself more. I'm not wearing rose coloured glasses, I know it will be both amazing and hard. Thanks in advance.

Re: Moms of 2+

  • 7 years between.

Best part: I don't have to worry as much about being fair because they don't want/need the same things.

They can each have their own childhood. Ds had me all to himself and how that he's not as needy, I can focus on babying dd.

Worst part: My sister and I are 10 years apart and I don't even remember much of her childhood because I had my own stuff going on. Then I moved out when she was 7 so we never got the chance to be close.

My kids love each other more than my sister and I did but I'm sure as ds gets older, dd will become more of a pest than a playmate.

  • 19 months apart. Best thing is having 2 kids and seeing DD enjoy being a big sister. The hardest part is deciding whose needs to put first when they both need something at the same time. Sleep deprivation is no fun either especially since DD is such a great sleeper so this is kind of a shock to the system.

  • Currently 2 boys, 26 months apart.  Will soon add a 3rd boy who will be ~20 months younger than DS#2.

Best Part:  Seeing the boys play together.  They are already great buddies and often keep each other entertained.  Also, watching DS#1 be such a helpful and caring older brother.  DS#2 adores his big brother, and you can often see it on his face.

Worst Part:  Seeing the boys fight.  I have uttered the phrase "Stop slapping your brother" way too many times already.  DS#1 is getting possesive of toys, and DS#2 likes to antagonize and throw toys at his brother.  I'm hoping they out grow this phase soon!

The other hard part is prioritizing time.  They often both want/need different things at the same time, so I have to evaluate the importance of the want/need to address the right one first.  DH and I also try to make sure that each boy gets some 'alone time' with us, but we also make sure we get family time.  There is a lot of time balancing going on in our lives!

  • Thanks ladies! We are very excited to be adding another LO but I'm definitely nervous. I know though that just like with DS once we settled into a groove things became much easier. Here's hoping it doesn't take too long and DS doesn't get too jealous!

  • I have two under two right now and it is a learning process for sure. My first LO is 20 months and second is 1 month. Most days are okay but somedays I melt down. I am relying on family more this time around. I find mealtime the most challenging because sometimes both LOs need me at the same time. Also in the am is difficult when they wake up. I live in a two story house so just getting them both downstairs takes planning. I usually go get the older LO from her crib, change diaper, etc, and bring her to the first floor living room. Then I go get the baby. I am trying to get more into baby wearing with the Moby which has been good since the baby likes to be held a lot (don't they all?) I think the best change I have made is getting the groceries delivers through peapod. Im not sure if there is a market near you that does deliver but if so, look into it. It is AWESOME. I find I spend way less money too because I shop the sales. I can't imagine how I would get food in the house otherwise. I am not brave enough to venture out with both at this point and my DH works crazy hours with a 2+ hr commute each way. Just take it a day at a time though. You will be fine and the 2U2 board is really helpful!
