diaper blow-outs

MY DD is 7 days old and yesterday and today she had large diaper blowouts with poop all over onsies her body, etc. A lactation consultant told me, welcome to bf poop." I am just wondering if this is really what poops continue to look like or is it more so because her digestive system is still figuring things out, etc. just can't imagine this happening regularly but I know it could be very possible.

Bfed baby poop is runny and explosive and that lasts a long while. Often blow outs is also a sign of needing a different sized diaper
I was thinking this too on the diaper sizing except she is in newborns and I think those might be slightly big around her legs and its running out. Would you suggest I try a different brand?

Yes scope out a different brand and make sure the little ruffles at the leg holes are out and laying down so the elastic makes a better seal
I tried Target and liked the price, but might try the Pampers Swaddlers until she gets a little bigger.

  • I second making sure the ruffles are all turned out around the legs and make sure the diaper is fastened securely, pulled up high enough on her back, etc.  Try different brands and if that does not work, try a size up.  Sometimes they weight range is way off on diapers, because it's doesn't take into account a long torso baby, and both of my girls have been and we had to move up to the next size diaper well before the weight range ran out.

BF baby poop is runny and can be explosive, formula fed baby poop is also at times runny and explosive, it's really just newborn baby poop in general.

  • BF baby poop can definitely be explosive, especially during the first few months.  I feel that by the time LO was 2 or 3 months, that got a lot better.  We used Pampers swaddlers until things settled down a bit and then we're switched to the Target brand.  The swaddlers seemed to hug his body better.  I know it sounds a little crazy, but I miss the explosions (just a tiny tiny bit) because I knew that he pooped and that I needed to change him.  Now, I can't always tell since he does those silent sneaky poops... he's still EBF and his poops don't smell!

Have no fear, once baby starts on solids, that whole no smell thing goes right out the window.  Especially once you start meat!

  • Does the runny, explosive poop stop once they start solids?
  • We had this issue as well at first. My lo has a slim waist. Pampers swaddled have by far been the best. We still occasionally have a situation (15.5 weeks) but not as often. I also learned the hard way to make sure the ruffles were turned out. :))
  • yeah don't forget the tab at the back - make sure it's not folded in by accident!

The best is when someone else changes the diaper for you and unknowingly sabotages you by leaving the back or the leg ruffles folded in.  My husband now does his "3 point diaper check" after he accidentally did this to me a couple times :)

Ha! Same here! I wanted him to dress her when leaving the hospital so I could shower. She blew out in her car seat when we got home. There has been no such nonsense since.
