Cloth Diapering

Another poop post

*Yuck warning!*
So how does one tell the difference b/n normal slimy BF poop and one with mucous that might indicate a food sensitivity? I tried Google, but I couldn't tell the difference b/n one poopy diaper and the next for the most part. Is it going to be obvious if there's mucous in it? L's diapers almost always look like yellow paint, cottage cheese curds, and some clear snot. Also, what does it mean if quite a few of his poops come out green, as if he's been eating spinach? He normally only nurses on one side, which I thought was the best way to prevent the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance = common cause of green poop.

Re: Another poop post

  • In my experience, you just know when there is mucous. *Ew Warning* E's was stringy, stretchy and slimy, not just watery/wet. The whole poop would be like that. There was a definite difference between a normal, runny newborn poop and a mucousy one. Sorry I can't be more specific than that.

About the colours, a huge range is normal, as long as they aren't always green. But if I was ever concerned, I would just ask her paediatrician, because it is so hard not to freak out when you see something weird. I have read a little about foremilk/hindmilk imbalance and some are now saying that that doesn't actually cause green poop and that it isn't actually something that nursing moms need to really worry about. But I can't remember exactly where I read that, or how reputable the source was so take that with a grain of salt.

  • I'm no expert, but I was told that imbalance caused more frothy poop and green + mucous was more intolerance related.

R had a little mucous in normal color poops for about 2 weeks before he had a very large very gross green, smelly, mucous poop. It was really obvious. He also started spitting up more and was very gassy. I cut dairy and he's back to normal...took 4 weeks for poops to go back to yellow.

However, green can be a normal color. Did you notice any blood? You can have your pedi do a really quick check to see if there is any blood in the diaper which would give you a more definitive answer.

  • The only way I could tell DS had a sensitivity was because he had mustard colored poos with very obvious blood spots in it.

  • P's diapers never tested + for blood, but did for white blood cells (inflammation.) her mucous and discomfort were obvious. You've posted quite a few times, maybe try cutting dairy for 2 weeks and see if there is any change. 2 weeks won't fix it if it is an intolerance, but you should see some improvement.

  • I'm probably just being paranoid and possibly slightly desperate to end the 2am squealing session from gas pains. We had been having at least one good night in b/n the bad nights, but we've had a succession of bad nights lately. If it doesn't change soon, I will definitely try giving up dairy to see if that helps.

If it's that bad, I'd just give it a try. R is a TOTALLY different baby since I cut dairy. It took about 2 weeks to see improvement in gas. We used to give him gas drops at least 2 times a day, and now I haven't given them in 2 weeks (I have been dairy free for 6 weeks). He would scream during our last nursing session before bed and was just miserable. It's so much better now. Can't hurt to try...

  • You could also just try keeping a food journal and see if you notice a pattern

  • I think it's the acidity in tomatoes. I had to give up citrus and tomatoes when I nursed Colton.

  • Maple, do you think she meant lipase? I've heard that makes frozen milk taste sour. Or maybe she was just an opinionated moron. Take your pic. :p

Maybe "not very swift nice lady?" She's actually a really nice woman but she regularly has very strong, very wrong opinions. She's the person who didn't want me to carry maple syrup buckets when I was pregnant and got into M's face and upset her while she was napping. She definitely didn't mean lipase. She said that M must be allergic to dairy since all she drinks is milk. ... Um, ok…
wrong.  opinions cannot be right or wrong  :P

but show that a person is a moron? YES!!

Good point. Wrong ideas? Believe things that are not true? And MK, I actually remembered the lactose thing after I typed that, but I'm sure that's not what she meant. (And of course my opinions are never wrong ;) )

  • I knew a kid who could eat tomatoes by the handful but they would wreak havoc on his stomach and bm. I think oranges too. It's an acidic thing.

But true @Mapleme‌ it's easier than dairy.
  • But I could be wrong! :)

  • Okay, I've decided to see if cutting out dairy helps b/c there is definitely some stringiness going on in the poop today. Obviously I need to avoid milk, cheese, sour cream, butter, ice cream, etc. What are the less obvious things I need to cut out as well? And I know this is probably a stupid question, but I am still safe to take calcium supplements, right?

  • Jane, you new to decide whether you want to just cut obvious dairy for a week or two first and see if it makes a difference, or if you want to go all out dairy free. If all out dairy free, you have to cut all baked goods and anything with casein or whey in the ingredients. Luckily now packaged foods are required to state milk into allergy warning, or at least bold milk ingredients in the ingredients label. I find it easiest just to avoid all packaged foods when avoiding dairy.

  • @TJ1979 Okay, I guess I'll start with the obvious stuff and keep an eye on labels so I at least start getting familiar with what packaged things have it. This is going to be hard. I started fixing a bowl of chili earlier and put shredded cheese AND sour cream on it without even a second thought. Oops!!!

Aw Jane I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I ate a whole twice baked potato with bacon, cheese and butter the first week I gave up dairy before it even dawned on me it was full of dairy.

I really like www.godairyfree.org for tips on label reading. It's hardcore no dairy at all though so don't let it scare you if your plan is to just avoid obvious at first.

  • Oh my gosh, we are going to have to go whole- hog with the no dairy diet. L woke up screaming with gas pains every 2 hours last night. :( Do I need to talk to the pedi about this or can I just jump in? He's usually good with whatever I want to try.

Also, what's my best non-dairy milk option? Almond? Soy? Rice? I need something to put in hot tea and granola.

    Sorry Jane. It's no fun.

  • Coconut is my favorite, definitely give a few a try though. Coconut ice cream is,amazing! Almond is ok, soy is gross (in my opinion).Cleary ice cream is my biggest issue with no dairy.

  • Hey Jane, I just wanted to pop in and say that you may not want to use soy as a milk sub just yet. It's so commom for milk intolerant babies to have issues with soy that if you start adding in soy, you might not see an improvement when you remove dairy. That happened to me. I went dairy free for a couple of weeks and saw little to no improvement. Then DSs doc advised me to remove soy too and I finally started seeing an improvement. I think I would have seen an improvement before that if I hadn't added so much soy. I hardly ate soy to begin with.
  • Also, I vote oat milk as the best all around milk sub. It has a good taste and it's the creamiest IMO, so it works well in coffee and tea. It also works well in most recipes. I baked with it a lot.
