Pain reliever

What do you ladies use to help your little ones when they need medicine? I mean if are in pain from teething or have a fever, do you use Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, or something else? Or nothing?

Re: Pain reliever

  • I give her Tylenol. Not sure if it always helps but I feel safe doing so.

We've used Tylenol up to now. It is what the peds office gave us for her first needles and it's what they recommend until 6 months. But at some point I may switch to Motrin. I find the ibuprofen to be more effective for myself than ASA.

ETA: it depends what for as well. If she has a fever I will give her meds right away. If she's just a bit whiney from her teeth I try milk Popsicles and teethers first unless she seems to be really in pain.

I'm very conservative when it comes to meds. I don't give anything after vaccines, low grade fever, or mild teething pain. They actually recommend you not give anything after vaccines because the body needs to respond to the vaccine for it to be effective.

For my older 2 I like Motrin because I feel like it works better but for baby I'll use Tylenol. My pedi said he'd perfer it that way. Ibuprofen is hard on the liver when they're little.

Tylenol/ibuprofen do not effect the immune system or efficacy of vaccines. And ibuprofen is metabolized by the kidneys.

J was sick this week and I alternated generic infants acetaminophen and ibuprofen. I give acetaminophen after shots.

  • I have heard of one study (several years ago) that was vague and said in a very small percentage of kids may slightly decrease efficacy when given routinely without reason (aka fussiness, fever). From my understanding, this wasn't significant And couldnt be determined if the few kids just had a lower immune response by chance/other reasons.

If you can find these would you share here or pm me? I'm genuinely interested.

  • I give Tylenol for fever and Motrin if she seems like she's in pain. I do the same for DS. I can count on one hand the number of times I've given meds to DD though.
