All About the Nap

Forget the STTN! What does the nap time / day sleeping schedule look like in your home? (Please include how old your LO is for reference.)

    14.5 weeks old

4 to 5 cat naps throughout the day usually 20-40 minutes long, but STTN. Occasionally, she'll sleep for an hour or more.  She naps wherever she is when she's tired (bouncer, play mat, my arms). No schedule of naps as far as going down at a certain time. If we are out and about driving around, she sleeps like a rock in the car seat.

We'll start a more structured schedule in between 4-6 months.
This is pretty much how C is. He's 12.5 weeks.

  • Oh thank god. All the pp's are basically what we are doing. J sleeps when he's tired. And passes out in the car. I feel like I will follow his lead - he will start to be awake longer soon enough and then we can structure naps more. Right now, I'm really enjoying not having to be home at certain times for nap time.

  • D is 15 weeks.

He is on a 2.5-3 hour cycle of wake, eat, play, sleep.  He's usually up for the day around 7:00, so it works out to be about 4 naps that last anywhere from 40-60 minutes.  I try to never let him go longer than 2 hours without a nap.  He usually takes his last one around 4:30, is up by 5:00, and is down for the night two hours later.

He also is up at least once throughout the night to eat... usually twice.

At 10 weeks Noah naps maybe twice a day for 30 min - an hour (and only on us). The crib is napping kryptonite.

It is weird though, because he STTN 8-4:30 or 5:00...

The lack of naps is making me crazy, but I think I need to let go a little here...
  • What a lot of others have said. We have been sleeping through the night for a solid week, about 9-6 give or take. The napping is a fuster cluck, though. No set schedule and we are cat napping about 30 minutes or so 3 or 4 times a day. Last one is around 5 or 6 up for a few hours then bedtime routine starts at 8. Like @internationalkate said, the crib is kryptonite. He hates it and will sleep maybe five minutes in it. His naps tend to happen in his mamaroo (rarely), mostly the bouncer. If he sleeps on me, I can get an hour-hour and a half out of him.

I noticed he sleeps well on his belly, but DH is still scared that he will suffocate if he does so. He rolled belly to back twice, and has good head/neck strength. Should I tell DH he's ridiculous and let DS nap on his belly?

We will start a more structured nap routine around 4 months as well.

We swaddle for naps and naps are in the swing (he sleeps during the night in his crib).

He takes a 3 hour nap after he eats in the am usually around 6:30. Then he is up for about two hours and then goes from happy to mega melt down at almost exactly 2 hours of being awake. He then takes a huge nap, usually 4 hours but today it was 5. And then he is up for the rest of the night and goes to bed around 9-9:30. He does sometimes take a cat nap on our nightly walk after dinner.

My baby enjoys his sleep which is good because so does his mom.
  • @jennyd321 - I let him nap on his belly if I'm puttering around and can keep an eye on him.

Lately, LO fights naps so hard... then becomes inconcolable. This week, the k'tan is the only way to get him to doze off.

No real schedule but probably every 2-3 hours. He needs one most around noontime, and 6.

He also sleeps so hard in the carseat. I'm not sure how I'll get him on a schedule unless we just don't go out and that seems implausible.

    11.5 weeks, btw.

  • At 10 weeks she still just sleeps whenever she feels like it. She's been asleep for 3 hours now and is still snoozing away. Works for me.

Sleeps 9 to 5 bottle back to sleep and then up for the day at 9 or 10. Naps 45 minutes every 1 1/2 hrs swaddled in her crib or pnp. 12 weeks in 2 days

Wakes up for the day around 8:30-9am, bottle by 9:30, nap by 10:3 0-12 (hopefully).

After 1pm, G-d knows what this child will do. Last Thursday she did not nap at all, and was up until 12am. Sometimes we can get her to nap during an afternoon walk. Sometimes she will take an hour long afternoon nap on her own. When she does not nap, she can talk for half hours at a time at the toys in her pack n play, so we leave her alone and see what happens.

We are trying for bottle-book-bedtime at 7:30, and a dreamfeed at 10:30, though that is entirely up in the air. Right now she headbutted us during feeding (her sleeping cue), yet she is wide awake in her crib.

  • Mine will be 12 weeks on Tuesday & naps about 5 or 6 times a day for nearly exactly 30 minutes each time no matter if we're out or at home.
  • This feed is awesome. I have been so stressed bc LO has only been doing catnaps and one longer nap a day. I've been trying to get him on a 3hour eat/wake/sleep and it's just no go bc that lack of long nap kills everything. He's 11 weeks today and he sleeps 9-3/4 then again til 6 after that he's up for ~30 min then a solid 2-3 hour nap before really getting up for the day. After that he usually naps again around 11 for 1-2 hours then 20-30 min naps every two hours until bedtime routine at 8/8:30.

We don't have a structured schedule but we do follow a sleep- eat- play routine. She wakes up around 6:30, eats and then takes a long nap (2- 2.5 hours), then around 12-1 she takes another nap and again at 4-5. Depending on how long this last nap is she goes to bed at 8 or 9, she still doesn't STTN.
She also has days like today when she skips her mid day nap and instead takes 2 or 3 20 minute naps here and there

Up between 4-7am. If he's up before 6, he'll usually go for about an hour around 9ish. Then down for a 1-3 hour nap around 10-12. Usually in the swing lightly swaddled. Another nap around 5, but if he goes later than that he usually just wakes upto feed around 9 or 10 and goes down for the night. He's still waking up at least once around 2-4am. The later nap is the hardest to get him down for, I feel like I spend at least two hours getting him down for that one. Later nap is usually in the crib and he is sleeping at night in the crib as well.

  • @emotionlotion‌ - don't feel bad. Luka definitely doesn't sleep that much. It varies depending on what we are doing for the day, but some days we are lucky if he gets 12 total.

  • Naps...that is funny. He sleeps through the night and normally skips a morning nap unless we are in the car. Afternoon is 30 minutes if I put him down and an hour if I hold him. Around dinner we get another hour.

DS is 14 weeks. This exactly.

  • DD wakes up at 7am and pretty much needs a nap for every 2 waking hours. Her nap lasts anywhere between an hour to an hr and a half. Sometimes if she catnaps during the day, then she will do a big 2-2.5 hr by late afternoon. Bedtime is around 8ish. She typically wakes up around 11pm (then I go to bed), and again around 4ish to eat. Sometimes she skips the 11pm feed and wakes up around 2ish for a feeding.
  • 14 weeks, he usually takes a nap around noon, and around 6pm. They only last an hour though. He's been catnapping at daycare at random times too. Only sleeps for 5 hour stretches at night, I can't wait for that to increase.

  • @emotionlotion‌ I'm another one with a kid who doesn't nap very much, the longest nap she has taken in at least a month was 45 minutes, but they're usually 30 max.
  • My girls lose their shit if they are awake longer than 2-3 hours. They get overtired so easily.

We get 3 to 4 naps a day, with one good long 2-3 hour one. They're starting to need more cat naps and less long naps now though.

  • DD is 11.5 weeks.

A good day for us is:

    7 am awake
    8:30-10:00 nap
    12:00-2:00 nap
    4:00-6:30 nap
    8:30 bedtime

Sometimes she'll take daytime catnaps of 45 minutes but I almost always get that long late afternoon nap.

Unfortunately, I have a nap monster who sleeps in her swing, swaddled, with white noise and a pacifier.  Can't WAIT to wean her off of those (insert sarcasm here).  But for now, I'll do what I must to get her the sleep she needs.  I can put her down in her swing awake and she'll put herself to sleep so I figured she's at least learning that skill.

Nighttime is in the RnP and swaddled in our bedroom.
