  • Loading the player...
  • Same as Stargirlb, we delay cord clamping, otherwise I'd donate.

  • Ditto StarGirl..Delay in Clamping.  :-)
Live like there is no tomorrow..Love like you have never been hurt...
  • We will not bank cord blood. The chances we would personally use it are very low and definitely not worth the cost IMO. Unfortunately my hospital does not have an easy or free system for donation in place. I have read that with some effort it is possible to do delayed clamping and obtain cord blood for banking.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I've never heard of this delayed cord clamping. You just ask the doc/nurse to not clamp just yet? And for how long is it delayed? I'm so intrigued!!
  • It's not an option, but I haven't decided yet. I'm still debating donating or delayed clamping

Yes, just tell your Dr. You'd like to delay cord clamping. You can have it delayed for 5 min up to an hour or more. Just whatever you want.
I just have them delay it until I am about to deliver my placenta.

  • My son was on my chest for a few minutes until my husband cut it. We opted to delay cutting too. I was just curious what others were doing. I read an AAP article that defined delayed cutting as anytime after 1 minute after birth. By that definition almost all cuts are delayed, say if your significant other does it. Hmm. I can't see anyone but a doctor cutting it that fast (less than a minute after birth) they must extract the baby and then bam, snip!
  • A whole hour?!?! Didn't realize that. I thought delayed cutting was just when it stopped pulsating??
  • If our hospital had a donation program, i would donate, but the cost is way too high for the potential benefits of having some other company come in to do the banking.

  • Yeah I've read you can do it for as long as you want. I just had them cut it once my placenta was about to deliver. Maybe around 25 30 Min?

  • We are debating between delaying clamping and donating. A former coworker just lost her six year old son to pediatric cancer. We feel passionately about donating, but I am wondering about the benefit of delayed clamping for my daughter v. the potential benefit of donating to someone else.
  • We're still considering banking (same as last time this was asked). Our hospital doesn't participate in public donation however you can still inquire at BeTheMatch.org when you reach 28 weeks to see if arrangements can be made. We're considering that as well.

  • Thanks girls for the info! Not sure how I'm on my 4th child and never heard of this before... :\"> I'm about to get my research on!!
  • We donated DD's and will again with this LO. It's way too much $$$ for us to bank it for ourselves.
