If you cut dairy while nursing

Okay, I'm experimenting with cutting out dairy to see if LO does better overnight. He always seems to struggle with gas or cramping overnight. I'm currently up with him every hour or two, often having to nurse to calm him down. In the last month, he started pooping less often too. Now that I've been off for 6 days, he's started pooping more often and he's passing gas on his own more. So I think dairy was probably his issue. Nighttime hasn't improved at all yet.

So my question for you is how did you know your kiddo was struggling? What were their symptoms? Then as you were cutting dairy out, what were improvements you started to notice?

Re: If you cut dairy while nursing

  • We cut out dairy after DD had blood in her stool. She had mucus in her stool for about a week before the blood appeared. The pediatrician recommended eliminating dairy to see if she had MSPI. After eliminating dairy and soy, DD began pooping less (twice a day versus 5-6 times a day) and her poops became much less "explosive"- previously she was a very noisy pooper and if her diaper was off, it would shoot across the room :/. She also had some eczema that resolved. And ultimately, the green mucus went away, but that took much longer.

  • @amichelle723‌ - How long did/are you planning to continue with MSPI diet?
  • @giggler25 We started the diet at 8 weeks and as of yesterday, at 11 months, I gave DD cheese for the first time :)

So for about 9 months. A lot of what I've read says that you can start reintroducing foods around 6 months, but at that point I was still figuring out what was bothering her and was nowhere near ready to try dairy again. I also had to eliminate beef and tree nuts, and haven't tried reintroducing them yet. When DD was 10 1/2 months, I started giving her baked dairy for a few days. When she didn't have a reaction I ate it (I gave it directly to her first so that it wouldn't get in my milk if she did react). Then we did baked cheese for a week, and now unbaked cheese. Seems as though she's outgrown everything so far!

  • Thanks for the info @amichelle723!  Glad to hear your DD is doing well with dairy now!
  • My DD just got diagnosed with CMPA and our Ped said at least a year for their stomached to mature. Hers is very severe case though. I really want to keep BF so I'm working on the diet now. I really hope it helps her. Same as PP green mucusy bloody poos. No sleep, no naps, eats every hour almost. Cries all the time :(

Out of curiosity, how did your LO get diagnosed?  Our pedi said there's no real way to know for sure at such a young age, so they advise BF'ing moms to stay away from cow milk and soy bc it's the most common cause of blood in stool, but it seems like one big guessing game to me!
